Yup! I do not know what gauge steel it was, Iron would have been best, but I guess there is more steel on the market than pure iron (strange huh?) The texture came from heating the metal blank with a oxy-acetylene torch and than pounding it with a ball-peen hammer, and yes, the back was welded after I used an acetylene torch to heat up the metal to bend it into shape, after the weld was made, I once again heated it up and textured it with the hammer.
No kidding? I literally just learned how to use an acetylene torch last night! I wonder how long it would take to make Hiccup's shiny transforming shield...?

My guess would that it would take extremely long, you would have to pound the metal into a sheet than you would have to wrap it around a wooden disk, and if you would want it functional, you would have to fit all the mechanics into the wooden disk before you apply the metal sheet. My suggestion is that you use a pre-existing sheet of steel and go from there, you could even go to the point where you CAD it up and use a CNC table to cut it out.
