Nice! I like how the whole environment works together like that. It's got a great feel!
Out of curiosity, what does the Subdivision Surface modifier do?
Thanks, Chicken!
Uh... how to explain... Basically, you could say it smooths objects by increasing the resolution (I.E. the number of vertices, edges, and faces) and recalculating how the geometry should "flow", if that makes sense. Here's a couple examples:
Cube:
I start with a standard cube, made of six identical square faces joined at right angles
The Subdivision Surface modifier (hereafter referred to by the more common name of "Subsurf"), at one level, subdivides each face into two faces both ways, so there are now four faces for each of the previous faces. This new geometry is then recalculated to flow better, being smoothed and thus becoming a little more spherical.
At two levels of Subsurf, each of the original faces is subdivided into three faces both ways, for a total of nine faces for each original face, recalculated and smoothed as previously.
And so on.
Gear: Like so with this object.
No Subsurf:
One level:
Two levels:
Et cetera.
Make sense?

I've been working on a very simple bird model for the past several days, and I believe it is finished! I had to do a quick full render so it could be better-appreciated.

"Night Fury! Get
DOWN!!"
I sometimes find it easy to forget that the Night Fury, despite often acting like a winged kitten, has the reputation of being "the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself" for a reason. This might help to remind me of that.

Wow, it's beautiful, and I love how it looks almost photo-realistic. If Across the Archipelago (which I will continue working on at some point, but I'm just not sure when would be the right time) could have those visuals in the future, that would be incredible!
(Although that would probably only be possible on a higher-end computer, and I know you want AtA to be playable for everyone, so maybe the player could adjust the graphics in the settings.)
By the way, I was looking at the HTTYD subreddit the other day, and someone posted your art in the Tri-Weekly Toothless Doodle.

Thank you! I generally try for as much photorealism as possible/practical.

That would surely be nice, but I very highly doubt we'll be able to even come close to that. The BGE's built-in shaders are
far too basic (I think...
), and I don't know enough to write my own.
But "There's no such thing as im
possible, only im
probable," so I'm not going to completely write off the possibility.

Yup. Since joining the HTTYD Artists Discord, I've given Net a number of my artworks to post for that.

This took a very long time to render (102:02:34.36 [HHH:MM:SS.SS]) because of the volumetric mist that doesn't even look that great.
I'm rerendering without it, which should look a bit better and render significantly quicker.
Edit: Here's the mistless version.
