HTTYD is a trilogy, and all the dragons have to leave.

Hiccup: (Farewells Toothless) I'll see you again, bud.

(Toothless looks on sadly.)

Hiccup: One day...

Next scene:
(On black screen) Many, many years later.

(Inside an old people's home. Lots of noise and bustle.)

Receptionist: Welcome to the Berk Nursing Home, a proud initiative of the Scottish Health Service.

(Pan around the home.)

Older Hiccup: (voice over) This is Berk. We are no longer the stuff of legends, or of fables or myth. More 'civilised' people have moved in. We could keep our language, our culture, everything. But we couldn't keep the dragons.

(Children run to an older man. Older Hiccup. He sighs)

Older Hiccup: (voice over) I'm old now. Decades, maybe longer without Toothless has aged me terribly. I have children, grandchildren... My daughter even tells me I have great-grandchildren. I begin to wonder myself about whether the events of centuries gone past actually happened at all. We all must hope.

Older Hiccup: (His eyes are diverted to the window.) (voice over) We all must hope...

(Children sit on Older Hiccup's lap)

Child 1: Tell us a story, Great-Grandpa!

Child 2: Yes! One about the dragons, and Great-Grandma, and all that.

Child 3: And Toothless!

Older Hiccup: (looks towards the children. Brushes a child's hair) Well, it all happened so long ago. There were outcasts, warriors, Vikings, one-legged men... And the most amazing dragons!

(Looks at horizon, hoping. Eyes drop.)

Older Hiccup: But I cannot tell you fiction as fact. (Tear rolls slowly down his cheek) What I must come to terms with, as well as you, is that it never happened. I'm too old for fairytales.

(Children walk off slowly, leaving older Hiccup alone on a chair.)

(A lone night fury flies across the horizon. Hiccup thinks he hears something, but dismisses it.)

Older Hiccup: And yet... I still find myself foolishly believing. (Eyes downcast. Condemns himself to living the rest of his life alone.)

(A doctor comes into the room slowly, backing in.)

Doctor: Err, Mr Haddock? We have... Someone to see you.

Older Hiccup: (still downcast) And who might that be?

Doctor: I - I think it is more a question of... What.

(Door opens slightly. Toothless' tailfin comes into view. Hiccup looks up at it, hearing the metal against the polished floor.)

Older Hiccup: (squinting) Could it be?

(Door opens fully. Toothless stands in the opening, visibly older and greyer.)

Older Hiccup: Bud? Is that... Really you?

(Toothless bounds in to Hiccup.)

Older Hiccup: Toothless!

(They embrace.)

(Look into each other's eyes)

Older Hiccup: All these years... And I had nearly given up on you.

(Toothless gives a wise, knowing look, as if to say; 'I never gave up on you.')

(Baby night furies stumble into the nursery, along with the children of Hiccup and their mother.)

Child 2: Great-Grandpa? Are these... Night Furies?

Older Hiccup: (smiling broadly.) Yes! They are! A very special type of dragon!

Child 1: Can we keep them?

Older Hiccup: (shrugs happily.) Go on then! Let's have at 'em!

(The children all beam widely.)

Mother: Grandpa! Are you... (Touches his face with her hand) Smiling? You've never smiled!

Older Hiccup: (Laughs heartily) We're Vikings! It's an occupational hazard!

(One small child is sitting with an equally scrawny-looking baby Night Fury.)

Child 3: (looks at his Dragon happily.) I will name you... Toothless.

Older Hiccup: (stands up. Puts hand on shoulder.) Now hold on! There always has been... (Looks at Toothless) and always will be... One Toothless.

Doctor: (visibly about to faint) Oh dear Lord!

Older Hiccup: (looking deeply at Toothless.) Thank you... For coming back.

Toothless: (Gives a satisfied grunt of appreciation.)

Older Hiccup: (Leans into the circle of children.) Now children: THIS, is how to train your dragon.

(Roll credits!)
