When Stoick said "You are just as beautiful as the day I lost you" I was like on the verge of tears! THAT TRAILER WAS AMAZING :D :D :D
"There is Freedom waiting for you
On the breezes of the sky
And you ask 'What if I fall?'
'Oh but my darling,
what if you fly'..."

Oops, it seems that there was another, unnecessary topic for the trailer, and I posted in that without checking of there was a proper topic. My bad. At any rate:

Initial reaction: is there some sort of law requiring all animated epic fantasy films to feature "Kings and Queens" in at least one of their trailers?

Second reaction: Clearly, that song wasn't what got me hyped for Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, because this trailer somehow managed to lower my expectations for the film. This comes down to one factor: Valka. Yeah, yeah, I sound like a broken record to some people, I know, but it has to be said: Valka is looking set to ruin this film.

Putting aside the many, many problems with her character that I have brought up before, this trailer shows the following:

1. More of her being infinitely superior to Hiccup, to the point where she knows things about Toothless that he doesn't know. Yeah, we get it, DeBlois, Valka is the bestest dragon rider there is, was, or ever shall be, and Hiccup will never compare. Please stop making the supposed protagonist useless so your precious little Mary Sue can steal the movie.

2. Once again, no one calls her out on her bovine excrement, with even Stoick instantly forgiving her. Sheesh, even I'd held out some reasonable hope that Stoick might have been a little frosty to her at first, but nope, she's apparently so perfect that morality rearranges itself around her to the point where not only is abandoning her family for years something that is instantly forgiven, it's not even something that needs to be forgiven.

3. With Stoick's reaction went my largest hope, that Valka would turn out to not be Hiccup's mother, and actually be lying to him as part of some plan to manipulate him, for good or ill. I guess that's what I get for having hopes.

4. I think we can well and truly cast aside the idea of Valka being the slightest bit feral. She's absolutely at ease around people, because, you know, having her actually have some problems socialising with humans would be a character flaw, and we can't have that now, can we?

In short, this trailer has managed to send my expectations for this film plummeting into the depths. Trailers: you're doing it wrong.
Number of times I've watched the trailer: 18.

My pet peeve: people who refer to complete strangers by their first name. The correct ways to refer to a "John Smith" whom you have never met are Smith, Mr Smith, or John Smith. Not "John". He's not your buddy.

Cartoon Freak,

For starters, I'm glad you're here. It's nice to have someone who opposes the general agreement of a character to create discussion, so thank you. Don't let my username faze you, I try to be as unbiased as possible though I am obviously partial to Valka and that might show up.

Honestly, as mentioned in the post that is only two above yours, I wanted her to be someone completely different then what I saw in this newest trailer. I became a little obsessed with the idea of a character being flinty, anxious, a bit creepy in mannerisms but still kick ass and even more so, that character being a mother. Much like how, in Despicable Me 2, we see Gru trying to be a father, but not always being the best one, I have a liking for parents who can't really relate to their kids. However, I wanted to take that more to the extreme and I thought HTTYD2 had just the appropriate dark setting for it to happen. The first movie showed his father having the same "I'm trying to be a parent and I don't know how because I don't know what to do, what my child likes nor how to act around them" aspect and it was done so lovely. So I thought seeing it again with his mother as a sort of parallel would be excellent. Maybe the film makes didn't want to repeat a parent-child struggle because it was already high lighted in the first, I just don't know.

But all in all, that is my own desires and headcanons thrown on to a character that I initially didn't know much about. It's my own fault for creating such an assumption and being so far bent on it that I became disappointed that I wasn't right. But I don't don't despise her for that.

I feel that's a bit of the catch in your argument as well. We don't know anything about the new characters. It's hard to show a character's flaws, attributes, and perhaps anxieties in a two and half minute clip even if said clip was, and it wasn't, all about that one character. Especially a trailer that showed up in front of Rio 2, a generally more light hearted, younger audience geared movie (although I did hear from the popular YouTube channel Behind the Scenes that there was a dark moments in the film but I sincerely doubt it's on HTTYD2's level) that would naturally contain scenes to lighten up the film and make it so parents of younger kids will think it's appropriate. The trailer simply wasn't meant for us like the first one did (which was played in front of the Hobbit initially although it did make its way into The Muppets)

We don't know if, when Stoick's shock is lessened, Valka and him have a fight. We don't know if Valka acts flighty around people because we've only seen her talk in a more comfortable manner around two people that she generally should be close to, her son and her husband. We just are making many assumptions that will never be proved unless we are given something else or until we watch the movies. It's perfectly okay to have doubts and it's perfectly okay to still not like her character. I do think that in the end, Hiccup will still be the main character, and it'll be Hiccup who's at the heart of the movie, just like last time. -smiles- But hey, just guessin' right?

Great! Thank you! I can handle with the MOV container but I still want to have the Original source / video file. Because the one from YouTube has only a size of 60MB, it's converted so it has loss of quality (even if they are only minimal)

Posting a link is probably the better way. Embed videos just slows down the site. ;)

But it's only ONE embedded video... Except my 4 embedded videos in my signature xD
But I think of spoiling it, then it should be better for everyone... But then maybe no one knows that I embedded the Trailers in my signature... ^^

I would just like to make one thing clear: I don't hate Valka just because she's not feral. That's just one of many, many factors. But then again, DeBlois did say that she would be feral, so the fact that she is most definitely not is more than enough reason to be pissed off.

In regards to Hiccup supposedly still being the main character, I will simply say this: what useful thing can Hiccup do that Valka can't do infinitely better. She's already proven that she's infinitely better with dragons in general, and now with this trailer she's gone and proven that she's better with Toothless in particular. So yeah, the only way they're still having Hiccup save the day will be to pull something out of their ass, barring the increasingly improbable Valka Villain Probability.

Regarding Valka and Stoick's relationship, the initial encounter is logically going to be when there's the most anger, because Valka has yet to give a good reason why she didn't return. The fact that Stoick doesn't get angry is a sure sign that he just doesn't care. Therefore, no conflict, and thus Valka stays as the picture-perfect object of DeBlois' fantasies.

In regards to Valka's supposed feralness, there simply is none. She is perfectly articulate, and has no problem communicating with someone who is a complete stranger to her. Yes, Hiccup is a complete stranger to her, because he's obviously changed completely since he was a baby. Stoick may not have changed all that much in the big scheme of things, but Hiccup certainly has.
Number of times I've watched the trailer: 18.

I mostly agree with you about all of this. The more I see of Valka, the more concerned I get that she's going to bring the movie down from what it could have been by being too stinking perfect. I really hope that some significant information is still being withheld, because I just have a hard time buying the idea that she's still a loving wife and mother when she's apparently spent years making no effort to reconnect with her family. Again, unless significant scenes that would completely undermine the tone of the trailer have yet to be seen, I'm also disappointed that there hasn't really been any sign that Hiccup or Stoick press her for answers about such things. That's not even mentioning the whole thing about dragon training being in Hiccup's blood because of her, which I hate the idea of.

I think I'm more hopeful than you that the rest of the characters and plot elements can come together and make this a good movie, but I definitely understand your frustration about Valka at this point. I feel it too.

Come death. Come suffering. I will not live in fear. In this fleeting life where time escapes us, the path of least resistance is a slow quiet death. I'd rather burn out than fade away.
