What surprised you in the movie?

The mother and death was natural to me, because I already knew about them, but the twist at the end? :ermm: Um... Lets just say I was shocked and not hyperventilating....

Was it bad?
Depends how you like the idea of it.

I've seen the movie, and I don't even have a clue what you're talking about - the obvious example comes well before the end.

Not the 'actual' end. Near it. You know, glowing dragons? Hmm? Hint? No?

Honestly, if it was what I'm thinking of (Toothless fighting the Bewilderbeast), then it's hardly a plot twist, and more just the logical direction the plot was going. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's just not a twist.

Also, you know you're allowed to post spoilers on here, right? You don't have to be so cryptic.

Yes, except I didn't actually think Toothless was gonna become an alpha, for your information. To me it was unexpected because I didn't look at the soundtrack names.

Allow me to clarify: there was no particular reason to expect it at the beginning of the film, but by the time Valka's Bewilderbeast died, it kind of left an obvious gap that needed to be filled, with Toothless being the only real candidate. In theory, DeBlois could have written the story to present Cloudjumper as a possibility, but he never really got enough in the way of characterisation for that to be above Valka Villain Probability (note to self: I need a new term for that idea, since that's now completely impossible). In other words, Toothless becoming the alpha was less a twist, and more a gentle turn. Which again, is perfectly fine, and the scene itself was utterly awesome (though I still can't figure out how alpha-ism is supposed to work).

Speaking of surprises, I was actually surprised in hindsight at how little characterisation Cloudjumper got. I didn't notice during the film, and it certainly didn't hurt the story, so it's not a bad surprise, just an odd one.

What you said was true. I guess it wasn't that big a twist, but it's just that I'm not very happy about Hiccup, he's lost a limb, a dad, becomes chief, has a girlfriend, has an alpha dragon. Not the bittersweet ending I was hoping for.

Well, if DeBlois sticks true to his word, we won't have any dragons by the end of the final installment, so I guess you'll have to look forward to that. :P
