Berk's Forumvine

Haven't seen it but suspecting I will maybe like HTTYD2 better for action scenes though less because it never gives itself tine to just breathe in the narrative.

I need to see the second one again to be sure, but preliminarily, I like the first one just a tiny bit better. Don't get me wrong, the second one was fantastic and almost as good, but the first one had slightly more heart to it somehow.

The original is most definitely superior. The second one does have more ambition, but it is sorely lacking in execution, most noticeably in plot holes and the sometimes poor pacing.

I wonder why DW decicded to not give as much heart to HTTYD2 as HTTYD?

I know it's darker but still...

I don't think that's really something one intends to do. Basically any filmmaker who isn't Michael Bay or similar wants to include some heart in their movie (and to be fair to him, heart does find his way into his movies from time to time, but I imagine that it is a bonus and nothing more).

With that said, DeBlois definitely intended to have more action in this one, and fair enough. You really need to raise the stakes in a sequel, and he did so. That does lead to less time to devote to the happier emotional side of things. There is, however, plenty of heart in this movie, at least in theory. As with the plot, the problem lies in the execution.

Though the second one was an improvement in a lot of ways, overall the first one still takes the cake for me.

Both of them, for the first time, in theaters, I had a weird feeling that I wasn't actually there. Around when the credits showed up, I remembered I was in a theater, not on Berk.
Second time, not sure (I haven't seen 2 a second time yet).
Score, tie. Credits song, tie, they're awesome for different reasons. Character design, tie, because:
Hiccup's scar is there in the first movie! It's not as noticeable, but you can see it when he's close up and in bright light. I may have freaked out a little...

i was really surprised at the consistency !! the use of the alpha, when toothless goes under the red deaths control the pupils go to slits and nothing hiccup does brings him back until the red death is fed and releases his control over the dragon nest. im happy they tied that in
