Darkness and sadness are to entirely different emotion so settings in movies. HTTYD2 was dark because Toothless killed Stoick but that wasn't really "sad".
DW could do anything to make HTTYD bittersweet and sad.

Just imagine Alvin as Drago in that part...That'd be scary. o_o
