Considering how many times they have both nearly died it seems to me that their are only 2 things that would get them together.
1. Heather somehow helps out.
2. If one of them is believed to have died(as in one doesn't just disappear but they thought they watched the other die)
How do you think it will happen?

I kinda think that it will be a near death experience, or something like that.
Personally, I thought that they were going to get together in season 3. If Hiccup does the asking, I hope it's a little awkward and has that "Hiccup flare."

-like how Heather and Fishlegs just started walking arm in arm after communicating for a while via terror mail in this latest season. Astrid has been Hiccup's go-to person for advice and backup way longer than that, so I guess it's just up to the writers to decide when they finally say "you know what? Be my partner...please."

Well I just purchased the last of defenders of berk phew rather pricey but worth it just got to get the short films then the soundtracks lol lol

I've been thinking about this... hear me out guys: in RTTE Hiccup already has those braids in his hair that in the second movie we learn are plaited by Astrid. We're also told by the producers that Hiccup hates the braids, but leaves them in because they're plaited by Astrid... so does that mean she's the one doing the braids in RTTE?! I smell a secret love affair

(maybe they just didn't want to have to break the news to Snotlout? )

... but honestly I just feel like it's a bit of an oversight - they don't act like a couple in Buffalord Soldier. Still, interesting food for thought so just figured I'd share it; let your imaginations run wild now...
