When you think about it, stoick and valka had an extremely short time to be together again. I think valka only accepted him when he proved he could change. At least hiccup had five years, stoick and valka had barely just began to know each other again

Beat me to it Night fury fire =). What I would add is that making the most of the time you have seems to be a theme of the series. It's confirmed that the dragons are leaving and that means that, say Hiccups 65 years old at the time of 'wisened' cheif the dragons and people of Berk get a total of 50 years together as friends...
