![]() Just The Beginning… (a Bookverse fanfiction) ~ Prologue, by Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, the last of the Viking heroes. ••• Sometimes friends can come from the most unexpected places. I, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, ended up finding someone special from the least likely place I ever would have imagined. As a six-year old boy with no friends, but no absence of bullies, this day was something special to me. It is one day I never shall forget, even though at this time, my hair is as white as the snow on a winter morning at Berk. This story, is about the day I finally found someone who cared, but instead of telling you about it as the way I see it now, I'm going to tell you in the way my past childhood eyes saw it. Although the bright blue in those eyes have dimmed to almost gray, the spirit within them stays the same. The colors may have became duller around me, but in reality they haven't really changed. My childhood self might be far, far away from me, but he's still there. He never really left… ~ ~ Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third woke up with a start. A lightning flash illuminated the small, empty shack that stood a small ways from his house. The boy jumped, not expecting the loud, ominous thunder that shook his room. His eyes drifted to the nightmarish shack and he wondered how in Woden's name it could get any creepier. He had heard a rumor from his abhorrent, older cousin that the rickety structure was haunted. Could it possibly be true?… It certainly looked haunted. Then again, Snotlout wasn't notorious for telling the truth. Holding a pillow over his ears, as if to not hear it, the ginger didn't really care to find out. At least not at this moment… then again it was in the middle of the night. ~ ~ Putting his feet to the floor, Hiccup forced himself to get out of his stone cold bed. The chilling breeze brushed through the small child's ginger hair, as he looked out the window. Somehow, he obviously managed to go back to sleep during the storm, for it was morning. However, it must have been a struggle, judging by the covers half off the bed and the pillow a distance away on the floor. Heading out for some dragon watching, he grabbed his bearskin waistcoat and notebook. The ginger skipped breakfast, not hungry at the moment. His father seemed to already be up and moving and his mother was on yet another 'important quest'. The small child brushed his fingers against the door frame, while opening the door with his other hand. Hiccup walked slowly toward his favorite spot, about a five minute hike away, until he heard voices around the stone corner. The voices belonged to the other kids in the hooligan tribe and Hiccup could just make out what they were were saying. "I don't know… that stupid shack gives me the creeps…" once voice stated while stuttering. "You aren't telling me that you're scared, are you?..." Sneered another nine year old voice, that Hiccup knew well. It happened to be his unpleasant cousin, Snotlout. The small ginger eavesdropped, almost without meaning to, on their little conversation. The person who had spoken up earlier had immediately taken his statement back, not wanting to be looked upon as a coward. "Good, because I hear it's haunted…" Snotlout drawled while smirking slightly. The other boys tried to look as unconcerned as possible at Snotlout's statement. "Legend says that someone once died there… and that they were buried underneath the floorboards, and when they hear you walk Over their rickety floor, they'll rise up and drag you down with them!" Dogsbreath started shaking in a slightly hysteric manner. "That's ridiculous…" a frail voice cut through the silence rather timidly. The boys turned their heads to see the social outcast of their group… Hiccup. "You calling me a liar, useless?" Snotlout's voice turned to steel. "N-not at all…" the ginger stuttered in reply. The other boys stayed silent, knowing if you corrected Snotlout, then you were liable to get punched. "You were, and you know it." His cousin snapped as the smaller boy winced. The obnoxious nine year old smirked as if having a clever idea. "You should prove it isn't haunted then." He smiled down at his enemy. "I dare you…" Hiccup didn't notice, but he was shaking like a bird caught in the claws of a fox. Even though he doubted that it was haunted, it didn't make him want to find out. Unfortunately, if he refused, this would probably put a damper on his social image, and he already had a bad one. "Fine..." He finally got up the nerves to respond, even though he badly just wanted to disappear down a hole. "Great. We'll be there tomorrow, four in the evening." The bully grinned and turned to walk in triumph, with all the others following after. As soon as they left, Hiccup gulped, thinking this was probably the worst mistake he made in his life… ~ ~ His hand slowly closed around the rusty doorknob and turned it to the left. The door swung open with a shrill creak, making the boy even more nervous. Walking in, he held onto the door frame, but hesitantly let go after a moment. A loud noise interrupted his thoughts. It was the door slamming behind him. 'Just the wind…' the ginger told himself, but in reality he was on edge. The six year old walked across the floorboards, that were creaking with every step. What was it that Snotlout said?... About the ghosts grabbing him and dragging him down with them? That story seemed more likely now. He walked a few more steps and suddenly felt something thin and bony rise up from the floor and grab his ankle. The child opened his mouth to scream, but nothing would come. It was if he was frozen in time. He couldn't move, or make noise, he just had to let it happen. The bony fingers dragged him down through the floorboards with such ferocity, as if the ghost was angry. Right when the boy was completely under, everything went black. Hiccup suddenly jolted himself awake, his mind forcing him to wake up. It was only a dream… the ginger looked down at his sweaty palms in relief. That relieved feeling went away quickly... He knew he still had to go to the shack. 'Surely it isn't like that...' He thought, to make himself feel better, but what if it was?… ~ ~ "I didn't think you were going to show up, twerp." Snotlout drawled. Hiccup simply stayed quiet as everyone turned to look at him. He felt like sinking below the sand. "Well get on with it." Hiccup felt himself get shoved to the door. Taking a deep breath, he turned the doorknob to the left. The door creaked open in the same creepy way that it did in his dream. Hesitantly going in, the door shut behind him, only it wasn't the wind… it was Snotlout being a jerk. Hiccup felt a shiver go up his spine. Everything was broken down and looked as if it was gradually decaying. The floor creaked, but nothing came up and grabbed him by the ankles, like he expected. After nothing happened, a small grin escaped his lips. He was just being paranoid, there was nothing inside the house, just broken wood and a crashed window. A peaceful feeling came over the boy, as if nothing could go wrong. That is, until he spotted in the corner of his eye, someone running past the doorframe and into a different room. Someone was in the house. "H-hello?…" The child stuttered, the nervous feeling coming back. No one answered. "W-who's there?..." Still no answer. A dark shadow rose behind him, spreading out its wings menacingly. Not noticing until it was too late, the boy turned around to see a dragon fixing to attack him. He closed his eyes and waited for a blow, but none came. Opening his eyes, he looked down and saw a Long-Eared Caretaker dragon sniffing his hand. The dragon looked up at the boy and stayed calm. Not seeing him as a threat, she slowly walked toward a different room. Hiccup stared in awe and silence at the beautiful creature and curiously followed the dragon. They walked into the only other room in the house. It looked almost exactly like the other, except for a small bed in one corner. In the other corner, a boy about seven was hugging his knees in confusion and anxiety. He looked up at the red head that stood in his doorway, and tilted his head slightly. "You're the Chief's son, aren't you?" He asked curiously, as he moved a strand of his curly, raven colored hair. The ginger nodded silently while staring at the boy. "My name's Hiccup… and yours…?" He asked timidly. "People call me Fishlegs…" the older child answered, adjusting his glasses. He pet the dragon gently as it came to sit by him. "Nice to meet you..." answered Hiccup, pausing for a second before continuing. "Do you live here?" He questioned. "Since I washed up here…" Fishlegs looked to the ground. "I was abandoned as a baby..." He explained. "I'm sorry…" Hiccup looked to the ground also, wishing he hadn't asked. "Don't be. It isn't that big of a deal…" The boy looked up at his visitor. He rarely had anyone come, besides Gobber, who would once in awhile bring him a stock of food, since Fishlegs wasn't able to hunt yet. "But I wouldn't be as happy if I didn't have Rebecca." He stated while stroking the dragon on the head affectionately. Rebecca was his only companion, she had practically raised him. Hiccup was fixing to respond but got interrupted by a rock hitting the windowsill. He could just make out Snotlout's muffled words from outside, asking him if he was ever going to come out. "There's more people here?…" Fishlegs asked in confusion. "Yes, unfortunately." The red head answered in aggravation. The raven-haired boy stood up and looked out the window, without being seen. "Oh, I know them… at least, I've seen them around… they actually think this place is haunted…" he rolled his eyes. The ginger explained Snotlout's stupid little dare and Fishlegs suddenly grinned. "I might just have an idea…" ~ ~ Snotlout lost interest in the dare with his cousin and resumed talking with the other kids. They all heard a shrill scream and turned around immediately. To their surprise, Hiccup ran out in a terrified frenzy and hid behind Snotlout. "What the heck are you doing, Useless??" He asked while moving aside, letting Hiccup be unguarded. "You were right… it is haunted…" he stated in a terrified manner and didn't make eye contact. Snotlout rose a brow, he was just kidding about it being haunted, was it actually true?... "Afraid of a little ghost?" He snorted in amusement. "Please, I'll show the stupid ghost who's boss..." He stated confidently and went through the door. Once out of sight, a small, amused grin formed on Hiccup's face. A minute later, his older cousin came running out while screaming. This was enough to drive all the other boys to nervousness. After all, if Snotlout was scared, they should definitely be scared. The boys quickly followed in pursuit of their fallen leader. The ginger smiled and crossed his arms as Fishlegs came out to greet him. "So what exactly did you do to them?…" he raised a brow in curiosity. "Oh, that's classified information." Fishlegs winked at his new ally. "Nice acting, by the way." "I thought it was pretty good, myself." The boy grinned. "We make a pretty good team, don't you think?.." After a moment of silence he added, "Friends?" Fishlegs smiled. "Friends…Definitely Friends." ~ ~ Epilogue by, Hiccup H.H.III ••• Fishlegs has always proved to be my faithful friend until the very end. Even in my ridiculous plans, he always seems to have my back. After the haunted house fiasco, Snotlout eventually figured out about our little prank, vowing that he'd get us back at some point. A few weeks later, I had finally convinced Fishlegs to come out of his house. At first he was hesitant, but at least now he didn't feel as locked up. As we grew, our friendship did also. Fishlegs would do anything for me, and I would do anything in return. He was the person to tell me everything was going to be ok, the person who stood up for me, and the person that would follow me into physical and mental battles if need be. He was my best friend, and he shall never be forgotten. When Bards no longer sing, Heroes are no longer needed, and Dragons no longer roam the skies… He'll still be there. He'll always be there. |

I loved it! Everything about it was amazing! ![]() |
What should I write on my signature? Hmm... I am a Httyd, Gravity Falls and Portal (One and two) fan. I'm also a bookworm and an introvert. That was pretty random, but that's me summed up in two sentences. | |
