The clouds lay peaceful on this sunny day, not a drop of rain evident in the heavens. It was perhaps two weeks south of the meridian of misery, and into a new area of the ocean that was left peacefully wild, with few daring to enter the murky fog that was cast suddenly ahead. All those, except, one duo who soared through the air at lightning speed. Seemingly as one, they glided effortlessly through the clouds, until they came upon the fog and the figure atop the sleek black creature known as a dragon straightened, squinting into the depths of the fog. "What do you say bud? You think we can do it?" The dragon, known as Toothless, snorted and purposely flicked his head so one ear flap slapped Hiccups face harshly. "Ouch! Okay, maybe you're right, bud. Nothing has ever kept us from exploring new land, why should a little fog stop us now?" Hiccup said quietly, yet in his tone was doubt. One could tell he lacked the confidence a young adult his age should have. Yet Toothless suddenly flapped his wings forcefully and glided them forward. Hiccup obliged and set his mechanical tail to a new switch, which let Toothless fly more freely on his own. Grip tightening on the saddle, he waited as Toothless glided swiftly into the fog.

Thing seemed fine at first, if not a tad eerie. Then out of no where dragons flew from the fog, screeching and yelping as though they had just seen death itself. "Whoa, whoa!" Yelped Hiccup himself as Toothless arched backwards, the dragons swooping past him, above him, and dodging to miss him in their haste to escape. Toothless roared fiercely, showing his might, but the dragons didn't heed him. They kept fleeing, before a hideous zippleback, with his two heads biting at the other, tumbled through the air and flung itself squarely into Toothless' side. Toothless growled, roaring his protest, as he tried to bite at the dragon, who bit back furiously in an attempt to escape the entanglement. Finally the beast did so and yet Toothless, who was plummeting towards the ground, could no longer fly on his own, for Hiccups foot had come loose from its stirrup. The rider atop him, Hiccup, was flung from his saddle, as Toothless fell he clawed at the air before grabbing onto Hiccups metal leg, managing to get one paw around him and wrap him in his wings as he crashed to the ground.

They had landed in a very small clearing, surrounded by brush and trees so thick that it would take either a very strong man with a very strong sword or axe, or perhaps a dragon, to get through them. As Toothless rolled to a stop, he lay still before grunting his frustration. Then Toothless stood.. "Toothless.. You okay?" Hiccup asked as his dragon suddenly stiffened, growling, staring off into the distance. "Toothless.. What's wrong bud?" Suddenly the dragon pounced into the brush, disappearing into its depths, as Hiccup yelped, "Toothless, wait!" He moved forward to come after him when he stopped, hearing a rustling and a growl that sounded like Toothless. "Okay Toothless.. Come on out.." Hiccup called. What was with him? Was this some sort of new dragon mood swing? The growl deepened, "Toothless, come on... This isn't funny!" The growl became a snarl as two eyes, green with their pupils slits appeared in the brush. "Toothless...?" Hiccup said uneasily, taking a step back just as a black figure lept from the brush, tackling Hiccup with a fierce snarl. The figure was larger then Toothless, with a nasty scar over one eye, and as Hiccup stared into his dark, murky green eyes, he swallowed hard. The dragon suddenly breathed in, preparing his death shot, when suddenly a roar came from the brush as a figure collided with the dragon.

"Toothless!" Hiccup managed as his dragon went head to head with the other dragon. As Hiccup lay there watching, he gulped, gasping. "Is that a... a.. night fury?" Suddenly a figure came out from the brush, growling as it stalked towards Hiccup. It was.. another night fury! This one more slender, with deep golden eyes and charcoal colored scales. Perhaps a shade or two lighter then Toothless' scales, while the other was a pitch black color, a shade darker then Toothless' scales. As the night fury growled at Hiccup, Hiccups gaze went to his dragon. The bigger dragon had Toothless tackled, claw on his throat, ready to kill him, as Toothless growled up at him.

Suddenly something happened, something amazing. Toothless pushed the dragon off of him, tackling him with a claw to his throat... Before suddenly the rival dragons eyes dilated slightly, before retracting. Toothless' growl faded, as his pupils dilated, and he quickly stumbled backwards, before inching forward to sniff the dragon. The dragon came forward as well, sniffing Toothless, before the two started tackling each other, biting at each other.. but.. their teeth..! They were retracted!

"Toothless... is this your.. your.. family?" Hiccup asked quietly. Toothless scampered about before suddenly coming nose to nose with the female, who let out a quiet rumble.. much like a purr. Toothless rumbled his surprise, before tenderly nuzzling against her. Out from the depths of the brush came one smaller night fury. The small night fury looked surprisingly similar to Toothless, save for having both tail fins and deep, golden eyes. It was a little male, perhaps the same age Toothless was when he met Hiccup. Slowly, the youngster came up to Toothless and sniffed him, before whimpering and climbing up so his front paws were on Toothless' chest. He gave a bright chirp as he realized who Toothless was, and Hiccup gasped.. "Toothless.. this is your.. your family.. Your son, your love.. and your.. erm.. brother? Are there any others?" Toothless looked to him, his eyes sad before he looked off into the distance. His eyes held a deep sadness. "This.. this is all that's left.. isn't it?" Hiccup said sadly. Toothless murred sadly before looking to Hiccup, pressing his nose into his chest, before swishing his tail to Hiccup.

"Bud.. What.. What is it.." Hiccup said with worry, yet he already knew. Hiccup took his tail, setting it to the setting which he had made so many years ago.. the setting that gave him the right to fly free. Taking off his saddle with tears in his eyes, he watched as Toothless' family walked towards the brush, Toothless staring into Hiccups eyes a long moment. He looked from Hiccup, to the saddle, and back again... before finally to his family. Rumbling his sadness, he nuzzled against Hiccup before going after his family. The night furies paused, looked back at him from the brush, and the littlest night fury chirped happily at Hiccup, before Toothless nudged him into the brush. Taking one last painful look back, Toothless' and Hiccups' eyes met for a long moment, before Toothless' pupils turned to slits, and he turned, leaping into the brush and disappearing.

Hiccup hesitated, before running after him, but as he searched through the thick brush he found he could not find them. Then he saw them, the four dragons flying off into the murky fog, disappearing into its depths. Years passed, and as Hiccup returned to Berk and grew into a man, he watched as the dragons slowly fought each other, turning on their riders without Toothless' leadership. Some had to be killed, or what Hiccup kindly called put down. Others got sick and died as new illnesses from humans infected them. Slowly, there were fewer and fewer left. Finally, after many years, the last of the dragons died on Berk. Hiccup had just finished burying Stormfly, as Astrid came to the cliff... "Hiccup.. There is a silver lining to all this."

Hiccup tearfully looked out into the distance, before looking down, "No there isn't! There's nothing! NOTHING!" Astrid slowly put her hand on Hiccups shoulder, "Hiccup.." She said softly, bending to smile up at him at him, "There is... I'm.. I'm pregnant.." Hiccups tearful, pained expression stared at her. "What?" He asked meekly. Astrid smiled at him. "You're... You're sure..?" Hiccup asked, the edges of his mouth tugging upwards. Astrid placed a hand on her belly, "Positive. The gods have blessed us with a child." Hiccups smile broadened, his pain momentarily forgotten as he pulled Astrid into an embrace. "I love you, Astrid." Astrid smiled, "I know. And I know you loved those dragons, too. It's not your fault Hiccup. Maybe, somewhere out there.. Y'know.. Toothless survived." Hiccup looked doubtful, sighing, "No, Astrid. They're gone." Somehow he knew it in his heart. Toothless was likely gone, but a small glimmer of hope remained in Hiccup that somehow.. someway.. he survived..

Years later, as Hiccup stood at the same cliff, his young daughter wandered up beside him. She very much resembled Hiccup; she had a thin face, auburn hair, yet her eyes were blue like her mothers. Hiccup was drawing in the dirt at the edge of the cliff. "Daddy, whats that?" Asked the girl, who was perhaps only a few years of age. "That.. was my best friend.." The little girl frowned, "It's just dirt, daddy." She said quietly. He shook his head, "Look closer. This.. is a dragon.. You see, there were dragons when I was a boy." He said softly, as she gasped, "Really?" she said softly. "Yes.. there were great, grim sky dragons that nested on the cliff tops like gigantic birds." she gasped, as Hiccup smiled, "Little brown scuttly dragons that hunted down the mice and rats in well organized packs." Her jaw was open in awe, "Preposterously huge Seadragons that were twenty times as big as the blue whale and killed for the fun of it." She covered her eyes. Hiccup gently unfolded her fingers from her eyes. "Then there was the dragons of Berk. We rode them, loved them, and there is one that ruled them all. Toothless.. I met him when I was just a boy." He scooped her up and peered off into the distance sadly. "What happened to them daddy?" Hiccup sighed. "No one knows really. All we know, is that they suddenly disappeared. We've never seen them since." The little girl frowned. "Will they come back?" She asked sadly. Hiccup shook his head, "No." He said sadly. "But sometimes, late at night, when the wind howls.. I can almost hear Toothless whistle as he is about to fire a blast. Sometimes I swear the thunder that follows is his blast hitting its target. Listen closely, maybe you'll hear it too. Now go on, off to bed." That night the girl lay in bed, listening for the whistle. The wind howled, as thunder suddenly clashed in skies with lightning lighting the heavens. The girl peered out her window eagerly, for in the minds of children, the dragons would live on forever.

My avatar just got 20% Cooler

So this is the one shot story you made. Absolutely love it <3
I get a nano heart attack at the last 3 paragraft. I didn't see that coming, "Years passed.....".
You put such a detail why they were gone, and with Stormfly death..... i can't imagine how Astrid feels like.

Found a typo, you wrote "daragon" instead "dragon"
Ninety-nine buckets of fireworms on the wall, ninety-nine buckets of worms! Take one down, pass it around, you got ninety-eight buckets of fireworms on the wall....................... Forty-one buckets of fireworms on the wall, forty-one buckets of worms! Take one down, pass it around, you got forty buckets of fireworms on the wall..........- one bucket of worms! Take one down, pass it around, you got zero buckets of fireworms on the waaaaaaaaaallllllllllllll.

Wow!

A bit strange, I know it's meant to be sad but it felt like stuff changed too fast. Might just be me but I would've expected slightly less ease when Hiccup goes from being angry/upset to alright again. Well, it confused me at least, but the writing itself was great aside from that, I like the fact that you took on the luck factor to bring in their family by the random chance of them crashing. :P
