Gojo stopped walking and pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose as he looked back at the other man. "Permit me? Doesn't free time mean you can do whatever you want with it?" His eyes slowly tracked down to the knife that it glinted in the sunlight. "Oh, and if you're gonna throw that at me, make it a challenge to dodge."

"What?! Throw it at you?? Why would I do that? It's not like I want to kill you!" Shocked, Javon snapped his gaze back down to the knife in his hand as if it might take flight of its own accord. Then, chagrined, he realized that while holding the blade in his hand, the heavier handle "invitingly" toward Gojo, he had by habit shifted his grip to that used when preparing to throw. He felt as if his cheeks must be the color of Firelash's lower jaw. Without looking up, he quickly flipped it to his dominant hand, where he held it by the handle, as he would any regular knife. Then, kneeling down, he applied himself and the finely-honed blade to the arduous and smelly work of field-dressing, or cleaning, the boar.

Gojo smirked and headed off to find a nice, shady spot to nap.

About an hour later, Javon stood, stretching grimy, bloodstained arms as high above his head as he could, flexing this way and that to work the kinks out of his spine. While he had spoken the truth before beginning the job, he now deeply wished he had not been so quick to offer the deal that resulted in him having to tackle the lengthy, smelly task alone. Still, he was now finished, or nearly, and once he thoroughly rinsed the body cavity and cleaned himself up, he would have the rest of the day to himself and his dragon. Speaking of...

He let out a low whistle, and his dragon cracked open red-golden eyes to look at his human. The lad stood in front of him, wearing that soft, gentle smile reserved for his dragon alone. Firelash got to his talons, then ran a fork of his tongue along the viking's arm. For a moment, he just stood, savoring the companionship of the fiery beast, then he spoke.

"Alright Firelash, I'm just about done here. Care to help me get the boar down to the water? Then while I'm cleaning up, you can finish cleaning up here." A flick of his arm indicated the pile of entrails, a decent-sized meal for a dragon. The Monstrous Nightmare rumbled assent, paced over, carefully closed the talons of one foot around the carcass, then crouched to allow his rider to climb onto his neck. It was familiar work; the two often hunted together, both for themselves and for the other Riders. With a great leap and sweep of his magnificent wings, the two were gliding toward the nearest stream.

Firelash dropped the boar near the stream, and Javon followed, dropping to the ground with a shoulder roll to spill off his downward momentum. Then, kneeling beside the water, he plunged his arms into its cold flow, scrubbing them clean as best he could, while his dragon returned to the clearing for his promised snack. His hands and arms relatively clean now, Javon stripped off his baldric and belt, and placed them a short distance away. He then shoved the boar (lighter now that it was just meat, but still a pain to move) into the stream and plunged in after it. The chill current was especially invigorating after his hour's labor in the sun, and before too long, he had the animal, his knife, and himself all thoroughly rinsed.

A well-practiced roar brought his dragon, and after some time in the sun and Firelash's radiant heat dried his clothes, the young man slipped his belt and baldric back on. They then managed, with some difficulty, to grab the boar, and were shortly back in the sky.
"Alright, let's find the lazybones," he said. It took a bit, but the Skrill's shape was not easy to miss. It was tempting to have Firelash drop the carcass on top of Gojo for a rude awakening, but for as easily as his mighty dragon bore the load, its weight was no laughing matter, so he settled instead for a tandem roar with the Nightmare. His own voice was, of course, drowned out by his dragon's, but it was still a satisfying way to announce that matters were now in Gojo's hands.

Gojo jolted into a sitting position and instinctively reached for the katana at his back, already at half-draw before realizing who it was. He slumped back against Raiju, who had woken up as soon as Firelash was in the vicinity and was unphased. "Oh." He let the katana drop back into its sheath and stood, stretching his arms and back dramatically. With his lanky build, he looked like a beanstalk bending in the wind. "Take it it's my turn?"

Raiju huffed and covered his head with his wings upon hearing that. Now he was being forced to carry that hulking thing back to Base. All he wanted was his cozy pen right now.

"Oh, don't be such a sourpuss," Gojo reprimanded with a playful smile. "They held up their end of the deal." He turned back to the other man, the smile turning into a sly grin. "Right? No tricks up your sleeve?"

Javon was grinning again; their clarion arrival had had exactly the desired result. However, one corner of his mind marked that the other man's first reaction to hearing a nearby dragon's roar --drawing his sword-- was... interesting, and made a note to ask about it later. He didn't know much about the other man's history. He also wondered momentarily whether he would do the same were their places swapped or not; but as Gojo was asking questions, he focused on those.
"Yup! And how many 'tricks' could there be in cleaning dead animals? This is hunting, not some skald's production. 'Behold, ye vikings all, the ancient magic! See how the skin and undesirable bits of a dead animal are cut and removed! Gaze deep upon the raw flesh as the old life-water is carried together with dirt away down the water-road! Verily, the gods, even Odin Allfather himself, could not hope to comprehend such a thing though he were to ponder and peer down into Midgard for a year and a day!'" The viking stuck out his tongue. "Yeah, no. Anyway, ready to finally do your part here?" Firelash let the carcass fall to a relatively clean rock, then at a nudge from his rider, wheeled and began to wing away.
"See ya tonight!"

"Gee, if that were a production, you'd end up with some very traumatized kids," Gojo said in an aside to Raiju as he waved goodbye to his companions. Raiju did not acknowledge him. "Oh, you're such a grump when you're tired. C'mon, up and at 'em." He patted the dragon's rear end until Raiju begrudgingly got to his feet. "Don't worry. After this, you'll have all the time in the world to sleep." Gojo hopped into the saddle, and Raiju stretched his wings before taking off, snatching the boar carcass and heading for the base.

After they arrived and got the boar cooking, Gojo took the time to spoil Raiju for his hard work. He gave the dragon a bucket of fish and a good scratch behind the horns. Then he went back to keep an eye on the meat while his dragon snored away in his pen. Try as he might, Javon could not convince Gojo that he'd gotten the worse end of the deal. He was perfectly content to read his book by an open fire surrounded by a heavenly smell. He plopped into a chair and leaned back, kicking his feet up on the table, ready to burn several hours.

That evening, as night fell over the Edge and the Riders with their dragons all gathered around the fire to sup on wild boar, beans, cabbage, potatoes, apples, cheese, and a small cask of honey mead someone produced from somewhere --a sumptuous feast for no occasion but that Heather was bored that day,-- conversation turned to Terror mails recently received from their allies.
"Alvin says the Outcasts haven't had any trouble with the Dragon Hunters," Fishlegs reported. "At least, I'm pretty sure that's what he says. His writing isn't exactly great..."
"Let me see that, Fishface." Snotlout reached over and grabbed the parchment. Holding it so the fire illuminated the page, he studied it for a couple minutes. "Yeah, that's what he said. But man this guy's handwriting is terrible. Even worse than my father's." He dropped it, and with a squeak of protest, Fishlegs barely snatched it back in time to save it from hitting the fire.
"No surprise there," Astrid remarked. "They might not be at war with the dragons anymore, but they don't exactly train them and mount a guard."
"Speaking of, any word from your A-Team, Astrid?" Hiccup queried. "My dad said trade's been better recently in his last Terror mail, and mentioned lots of other Berk business, but didn't say much about them."
"They've mostly been flying patrols, Mulch tells me," she responded, pulling another parchment from Stormfly's saddlebags and handing it to him. "Also keeping in shape by rounding up and driving Sven's herds," she added, grinning. Hiccup read the message through, nodding, then handed it back.
"How about the Defenders of the Wing?" Heather asked. "Any more trouble with the volcano over there? Or," Javon just caught a quick smirk on her face, "with would-be kings?"
Snotlout, scowling at the girl, made an inarticulate sound of displeasure, but Hiccup cut in before the other man could.
"Actually, come to think of it, I haven't heard anything from them in a while. Fishlegs?"
"Uh... nope, nothing here," the blond viking replied.
"Why are you asking him?" Snotlout interjected. "Maybe I have." Most of the Riders just gave the Jorgenson a disapproving stare. The twins muttered something to each other that sounded rather uncomplimentary to Javon's ears, but they were far enough away that he couldn't understand what was said. Hiccup raised an eyebrow. Snotlout looked down into the fire. "Or maybe not."
Hiccup sighed. "Astrid?" She shook her head. "Hm. Maybe we should check up on them?"
"That wouldn't be a bad idea," Fishlegs said. "I'd like to ask if they can tell me more about their healing practices."
"Firelash would enjoy the flight," Javon put in. "He gets restless staying in one place for too long." The Nightmare snorted his agreement. "As do I."
"We can't just leave the Edge unguarded, though," Heather observed.
"Heather's right," Astrid agreed. "The Hunters know we're here, and by now, they've surely found out that we've reclaimed the gold. Viggo will be outraged at the loss of profits, and it's only a matter of time before he retaliates."
"I know, Astrid. That's why we're all stepping up patrols everywhere." Hiccup was silent for a few moments, thinking, then he turned to those who had not yet spoken. "Gojo, Snotlout, Ruff, Tuff, what do you guys think?"

Snotlout crossed his arms. "I've had enough of volcanos and giant eels and arrows, thank you."
Ruffnut and Tuffnut snickered.
"Don't wanna relive your biggest failure?" teased Ruff.
"Oh, no, dear sister. That's just a teeny-tiny mistake in the mile-long repertoire of our fellow, Snotlout Jorgenson," Tuff shot back.
"Shut up. Hookfang and I would just prefer to stay in range of a nice warm bed and Heather's fantastic cooking." He leaned his elbows on the table, looking straight at Heather. "Isn't that right, babe?"
The girl gave him the death stare, effortlessly flicking her axe from its sheath.
Upon seeing that, Snotlout fell back to the safety of his chair and muttered, "Never mind. I'd just rather stay at the Edge."
The ghost of smirk flashed across Heather's lips as she put her axe back.
"As good as Heather's cooking is," Tuffnut spoke up, "we Thorstons haven't had enough Loki-ish circumstances pop up lately."
"And when they don't present themselves, we create them," Ruffnut chimed in.
"What better way to get the ol' gears turning than a change of scenery?" He rapped his knuckles against his helmet.
"Couldn't agree more, brother!"
Hiccup rubbed his forehead. "Oh gods."
In the silent corner of the table, Gojo was leaning back in his chair, only its two back legs on the ground, as he munched on an apple. He'd never gotten a Terror Mail in his life and didn't know the Dragon Riders' allies all that well, so he'd had nothing to add to the conversation until now. "Mmm," he swallowed his last bite. "I wouldn't mind tagging along." Every time they spoke of the Defends of the Wing, a wave of nostalgia hit him. The way they worshipped their Eruptodon was something he understood well. It'd be nice to meet them.

"So, Fishlegs, Gojo, Ruff, Tuff, and Javon..." Hiccup mused. "That would leave myself, Astrid, Heather, and Snotlout. Half of us."
Toothless gurgled, and Hiccup patted the Night Fury's head. "I know, Bud." Then he looked up. "Alright, you four go ahead. If you leave at dawn, you should be able to get there by noon the next day."
Javon nodded as Astrid put in, "Don't wait around too long. Our team needs to be at full strength if the Hunters come calling."
"Full team strength?" Snotlout interrupted. "Hah! All you need is full Snotfang strength!" He flexed, and kissed his biceps. Hookfang cut his pleased roar short and hid his head under his wing.
"Oh, really?" asked Astrid, a dangerous expression on her face. "So you and Hookfang are going to single-handedly fight off an entire fleet of Dragon Hunters, equipped with bows and launchers capable of firing salvos of multiple dozens of one-shot-and-you-drop Dragonroot-poisoned arrows at once? Do explain how you and your dragon are going to survive that, let alone actually accomplish anything." She folded her arms across her chest. "I'm waiting."
"Uh... I... We... Er... That's not..."
Hookfang hissed, unfurled his wings, and body ablaze, took to the sky. Firelash rumbled softly in amusement. Javon quietly made a half-attempt to shush him.
"...Shut up, Astrid."
"Uh-huh. Thought so," the shieldmaiden responded, glaring at the stocky viking.
"Okay, enough," Hiccup injected. "Twins, Fishlegs, Gojo, Javon-"
"I think we're about ready to call it a night," the lanky Nightmare-rider cut in, affectionately patting his dragon's neck. Hiccup nodded. The two stood up as one, and after stretching, the young man sprang to the simple saddle. "We'll be waiting in front of the stables at daybreak. 'Night, all!" The fiery dragon took a running leap and was airborne. They circled the fire once, then made for their hut.
