Gojo looked straight ahead and pursed his lips, considering his response. "Sometimes." A long stretch of silence followed that made him feel the need to explain further. "We were taught that if you were an upright person, the dragons would leave you alone. If you were wicked, the dragons would bring the wrath of the gods upon you. So, when there were attacks, disappearances, maulings . . . no one batted an eye." He looked down and absently scratched Raiju behind the horns. "Whether or not they actually ate anyone . . . I never saw it. It's just another fable we believed, I guess." He snorted a little, trying to manifest his typical persona. "It's so stupid."

"...Oh." Javon looked away, racking his brain for the best way to respond. The other man's short answer, slow in coming, was very unlike what he knew as the usual Gojo, and it told him he'd probably touched a nerve, or at least a scar.
"I... I'm sorry." It wasn't a good reply, but it was the best he could come up with in the moment to prevent an even more awkward silence. Companionable silence was one thing; that was another. The viking shook his head and let his breath out through his teeth in a quiet hiss. His dragon gave a Nightmare's croon and turned his head to look him in the face, clearly picking up on the change of mood and wondering about it. Javon smiled slightly and reached around to scratch between the great golden eyes. Firelash rumbled softly, a deep, resonant sound as much felt as heard, and faced forward again. It always made the young man feel better, helped dispel his tension and focus his thoughts.
"Well... as long as you're... okay." He gave Gojo a smile, hoping it didn't look like the cocky grin the other's antics usually brought to his face, then looked forward and raised his voice, cupping a hand around his mouth. "Okay, guys! First stop, Wreck Reef Island! Should be there about noon! We can water the dragons and stretch our legs for a bit there before heading on to Swarmlands Island, which should be about a four- to six-hour flight from Caldera Cay. If we stay on course, there's nothing between these islands but sea. Between here and Wreck Reef, our only real detour option is Dark Deep. Between Wreck Reef and Swarmlands, unless we go way out of the way, the only option is Melody Island, and I don't know about you, but I and my dragon would very much prefer to not have to stop there!" Firelash roared an affirmative. "And for the last leg of our journey, the only island close to our route is Algae Island. Got that? Let's fly!" The two almost flapped out to the head of the group, but Javon decided to wait a bit in case Gojo had more to say on the previous topic.

Gojo raised a hand to his forehead and saluted Javon. "Cap'n." A playful grin danced at corners of his mouth, but his eyes betrayed him. Thank goodness for glasses. He didn't need the other man feeling sorry for him or worrying about him. The past was in the past.
Well, the best way to clear the air was probably . . .
He patted Raiju's neck, and snapped his fingers, pointing ahead—the signal for a boost of speed. Raiju immediately started climbing in altitude, twirled around once, then leveled himself and bolted forward.
"Catch ya later!" Gojo called back to his wingmate, an implied challenge. He knew the race wouldn't last long. They needed to keep their dragons' stamina up. But that was okay. As long as he quit making things awkward.

"Oh no you did not!" Javon exclaimed, eyes suddenly flashing with a fire that would make any Monstrous Nightmare proud. "Come on, Firelash! Time to outfly a Skrill!" The dragon roared, and a determined grin overspread the viking's face as his fiery beast pumped his mighty wings and they overtook the other Riders in just a couple strokes. The various cries of "What??" "Yeah, race time!" "Come on!" "Whoo!" "Here we go!!" "Whoa!" "Hey!" and such like went completely ignored by the young man not just crouched, but now lying full length along his dragon's neck, pressing himself as close to the scales as physically possible, that the Nightmare should be almost completely unhindered. The rush of the wind filled his ears, and the fire of competition blazed in his soul. He could not see his opponent from his position, but he knew, he could feel, his dragon was giving it his all.

Gojo look back to see Firelash rapidly approaching. He smiled a little. Good. He'd taken the bait. And it seemed the other Riders had joined in as well; although, they clearly weren't as locked in as the Nightmare that was torpedoing towards them.
He turned his gaze back to Raiju. "Hey, do you plan on getting caught? 'Cause that's what's about to happen."
His dragon snorted in disdain and flapped harder.
"You don't want to tire yourself out like last time. Then you'll be grumpy the rest of the fly."
Raiju took a moment of reduced speed to buck before shooting forward again. Gojo took that as a "Shut up, you stupid human. You started this, and I'm gonna win it," and held extra tight to the saddle.
He chuckled. "Okay, okay."
But, checking over his shoulder, he saw their opponents were still gaining on them. He suspected the lack of sleep was affecting Raiju's performance.

Some minutes later, the sound of heavy breathing brought his focus back to the present. For a few minutes, he wondered whose panting breaths he was hearing, then realized they were his own. He remained crouched, but shifted back to a sitting posture, looking around for his fellow Riders.

Firelash's pumping wings were about even with Raiju's tail, although the viking could tell his dragon was pushing hard to maintain the position. Fishlegs and the Twins were nowhere to be seen, although he, Firelash, Raiju, and Gojo were surrounded by clouds, so they were probably just out of sight behind one. He was wet, he realized; their flight must have taken them directly through one or more, though he didn't really remember that. Thinking back, however, he thought he maybe recalled suddenly being in an area of dimness at one point; that could be it. His eyes were streaming; their furious forward pace created a constant headwind which dried them faster than the tears could moisten them. He wondered briefly how Hiccup could get away with riding the fastest dragon in the world without going blind, but dismissed the thought as unhelpful.

Firelash, now beginning to pant, let out a frustrated snarl and abruptly tilted his head to whack his rider's with a horn. His new position was making it even harder to keep up with the Skrill, let alone outfly it. The young man yelped, more in surprise than pain, and called, "Easy, Firelash! The others are falling behind, and if you use up all your strength now, how are we going to get to Wreck Reef?"

The dragon wasn't having it. He quickly rolled upside-down so his rider dangled from his horns, then righted himself, which resulted in the viking being returned to the lying position; He then gathered himself, and, with two more full-force wingbeats, sprang forward so the tip of his snout just passed the other dragon. Then, with a cry of victory, flared his wings and settled to a hover.

Javon shook his head and sighed. "I hope you didn't overdo it. I'd rather not have to detour to Fireworm Island. Why did you..." he trailed off, remembering --or rather, not remembering-- his own state of mind during the first part of the race. He shook his head again. "Sometimes, I think we're too much like each other," he smiled ruefully.

Raiju let out a cry of frustrated disbelief as the Nightmare overcame him by a couple centimeters. Before he could rush forward, however, Gojo pulled him into a hover as well and started clapping.
"Good game." There was an unmistakable undertone in his voice that said it was over.
His dragon huffed.
"I'm impressed." He looked the Nightmare and his rider over, that permanently smug grin dancing around the corners of his lips. "Tired?"

Javon's labored breathing began to subside as his lungs caught up with the full-body workout he'd just unexpectedly been through. Firelash continued to pant as he hovered; he'd had the vastly harder part in the competition, though it had certainly taken a toll on both. His rider did not answer the other man's question right away; he was concerned primarily with tending to his dragon. He released both water flasks from his belt, and reaching around, emptied first one, then the other, into his dragon's too-dry mouth, being careful to spill as little as possible. That done, and the bottles made once more secure, he cast an eye over what he could see of the Nightmare's body from where he sat, especially the wings, looking for any sign of injury from overexertion. Seeing none, he leaned forward to gently rub the fine scarlet scales of the dragon's lower jaw, silently praising him for his indomitable effort. The fiery beast accepted the attention with a yet-slightly-husky purr, and Javon sat back and looked at Gojo.
"Not... too much," he said, "at least... I'm not. Mostly just... out of breath. But I'm sure I'll be feeling this tomorrow, regardless." The viking could also feel his dragon's heaving chest and powerful heartbeat even from where he sat on the sinuous neck. He couldn't keep the pride out of his voice as, nodding to the Nightmare, he added, "He is, though. And no surprise there; we all know Skrills are supposed to be one of the fastest species.* He's a fair bit bigger than Raiju, y'know, and it takes more work to move more dragon, even when said dragon has more strength."
The viking fell silent for a moment, then spoke again, in a different tone.
"Anyway, we'll have to take it easy the rest of the way to Wreck Reef. I will not risk overdriving him. Now, do we fly back for the others, or just wait here?"

*Actually, according to official information, I guess the Monstrous Nightmare is supposed to be faster than the Skrill, but that doesn't really seem right, and this whole time, I was thinking (and roleplaying accordingly) that Skrills had the higher speed stat, even when not riding lightning, so we'll go with this.

Gojo nodded, agreeing to take it easy the rest of the flight. He hadn't been expecting the two to put quite so much effort into his little challenge. "Eh, we can wait for them to catch up." He laid back against Raiju, putting his hands behind his head, and closing his eyes.
A few minutes later, the whoops and howls of the twins could be heard. Gojo opened his eyes and sat up. Yep, there was the Zippleback heading their way. Fishlegs and Meatlug were spinning out behind them. Obviously the twins had fun playing a cruel prank on them.
Gojo shook his head, but then an evil smirk crossed his face as an idea came to mind. He patted Raiju's neck and pointed at the twins. The Skrill seemed to get the message. He took off straight for the approaching dragon but at a slightly higher altitude. Then once they were right above the twins, Raiju flipped upside down, and Gojo snatched the helmets off their heads. The dragon quickly righted himself and began circling the victims.
"Hey!" Tuffnut exclaimed, feeling his bare head.
"No fair!" Ruffnut turned Barf's head to see the Skrill, and Belch followed suit.
Gojo laughed as his dragon flew rings around the Zippleback, who was spinning round and round, try to catch them. In the back of his mind, though, he knew they needed to stop goofing off, so after a few more twirls, he tossed the helmets back to the twins. "All right, all right, let's go." He directed Raiju to continue on their route.
"Who put you in charge?" Tuff pouted as he cradled his helmet.
"We are so going to Loki you for this, mister!" called Ruff.

"Guys, can we focus, please?" Fishlegs called. "Remember what Astrid said. We need to make this quick if we want to have any time to learn anything from them."

"Learning?" Tuff scoffed. "I gave up on that years ago. ...Except for new ways to Loki people. Or dragons. Or sheep. Or yaks. Or boars. Or-"
"Ya done, bro?" Ruffnut cut in.
"No," he replied, not missing a beat. "Not even close, actually. I've still got the various Archipelago avians, the fish, and at least one more bovine mammal to name. But anyway, that is the only kind of learning worth the trouble. The rest is just random facts and theory, like the world being round and orbiting the sun. Totally useless."
"I'm with you there!" Ruff agreed. They slammed their helmets, now back on their heads, together. Fishlegs and Javon just shook their heads at yet another utterly-nonsensical Twins rant.

"And I'm with Fishlegs here," the Nightmare Rider commented. "Come on, we've still got..." He looked at the shadow he cast across a bit of his dragon's neck and onto his right horns, and finding that not very useful, raised his left hand until its silhouette was clearly painted in the middle of Firelash's snout. "about 4 or 5 hours of flying left to do --assuming we're still on-course-- so let's keep moving."
