A few minutes later, a faint screaming noise came from inside the cave, getting louder by the second until Ruffnut came barreling out, clutching her helmet. Once her feet touched grass, she stumbled to her knees, gasping for air.
"Ha!" Tuffnut exclaimed. "Lookie who got here last! You know what that means, dear sister. My stinky laundry await!"
Ruffnut gave him the death glare, still breathing raggedly.

(Well . . . all this time I was thinking I needed to figure out how Gojo and Megumi escaped, and I couldn't think of how to write anything good, so I just decided to start and see where it went. Then I realized I really didn't need to write much yet because they don't have to escape all on their own. So . . . sorry that took so long :$)

Javon's happy reverie was, far too soon, abruptly shattered. Hearing Ruffnut's precipitous exit, his eyes snapped open, and he swiveled to fix her with his steely gaze.

"Ruff, what's going on?? Where's Gojo... and Megumi?"

Atop Firelash's shout, Kuro stood alert, peering at the jagged black crack.

At the mention of his rider, Raiju shook his wings out and let out a low rumble. He seemed to sense the rising urgency of the situation.
"There's a—swarm—" Ruffnut pointed back at the cave opening, "—angry little Smokies." Just as she said it, a light colored Smokebreath darted out of the cave with a shriek. She yelped and ducked, but it was only Shiro. The whimpering little dragon circled above Kuro, who lifted himself on on his hind legs and whined back.
Raiju seemed to be listening to their conversation. Once he'd heard enough, he wasted no time, spreading his wings and lifting off with a powerful roar in search of another entrance.

Great. Just when Javon thought he was finally in the clear and things were getting back on track with their original mission. But he couldn't leave his fellowrider in danger.

"Mount up, Ruff, Tuff! Follow Raiju. I'll head back in this way with... whatever-their-names-are. Korri and Shuro? Whatever. Anyway," and he turned to his own dragon, "Firelash? Would you follow Raiju, too?" The Monstrous Nightmare looked quickly between him and the retreating Skrill, shaking Kuro off his head as he did so. With a startled screech, the dark little dragon flapped up to join his lighter flockmate. Firelash snorted, anxious.

"Don't worry, Firelash," Javon hastily reassured him. "I... I'll be fine."

The Nightmare still looked uneasy, but with a swift lick to his rider's face, stiffly spread his still-sore wings and sprang into the sky after the blue-bellied lightning-breather. It was an uncharacteristically ungainly motion, to Javon's eyes; he felt a pang of pity as remembered again the sickening impact from earlier. He once more wished to deck the knuckleheads for pulling that stupid stunt, but he quenched the thought; there was imperative work to do, and he needed to focus.

The Smokebreaths evidently finished their consultation, and flew back into the cave with the dark one in the lead. This time, however, they did not speed off immediately. They paused just inside --Javon could see their lucent eyes peering back at him-- cheeping anxiously. The viking stepped into the cave, and the little dragons flew on ahead a bit, then paused again, once more looking back. He retrieved the torch from the floor and continued to follow the Smokebreaths, wondering just what he was getting into this time.

Gojo had wrapped himself around Megumi as a human shield after a Smokebreath had dive-bombed the boy and clipped his shoulder. There was no way they were getting out like this. The swarm was now circling them, their smoke cloud being shaped into a whirlwind and picking up small debris that came flying at their heads.

Megumi didn't know how the white-haired man was still standing. He was coughing violently and had to be cut and bleeding by now. Since they were trapped, there was really only one other option. The smoke was too thick to open his mouth and talk, so Megumi tugged on Gojo's shirt a couple times, then slid out of his grasp, flattening himself to the ground. He heard a little gasp followed by an intense coughing fit. The idiot probably didn't realize what he was doing, so he groped around until he felt Gojo's boot. He wrapped his hand around Gojo's ankle and pulled. He finally seemed to get it and joined Megumi on the ground, then started piling some of the metal junk on top of them for protection. Hopefully if the Smokebreaths couldn't find their targets, they'd give up. Of course, suffocating in this smoke storm was still a very real possibility if it didn't happen quickly. . . .

A rage-filled scream suddenly echoed through the chamber. Not human. Dragon. The Smokebreaths seemed to have stopped their attack to see the newcomer because their whirlwind suddenly lost momentum. A powerful gust of wind came from above and blew the Smokebreaths against the cave wall, some even flying out the exit. It also dissipated the smoke cloud enough that when Gojo looked up, he could see a blurry blue shape through the tears. Raiju! He had found the crack in the ceiling. Gojo wiped his eyes. Even from so far away, he could tell his dragon was brimming with electricity. He was furious. The metal objects around him suddenly felt sharper as he realized this could go very wrong if his dragon wasn't careful.

Just behind the crackling Skrill came Firelash, his much-broader wings doing far more to disperse the dense smokescreen around the viking, the lad, and the snarling Smokebreaths themselves, who clearly disliked being so exposed. A couple lengths behind him flew Barf and Belch, carrying Ruffnut and Tuffnut, Belch already sparking.

Upon this maelstrom burst Javon, led by Kuro and Shiro. The little dragons, with a cry, darted immediately for Megumi. Following their flightpath with his eyes, the brown-haired viking caught sight of Gojo's boots and trousers sticking out of a shallow pile of metallic items. He charged forward, crashing and clattering heedlessly through the steel litter strewn chaotically about the wide, rough chamber; from the looks and sounds of the wild flock of angry Smokebreaths, they needed to get out of there with all speed possible, and he didn't know whether the white-haired viking was even conscious or not. It looked as if he had been caught in a collapse.

The flock, detecting the new intruder, made to swarm him; but Firelash, seeing this, let out a furious cry of his own. No one would harm his rider while he was able to fight! His body roared into yellow-hot flame, blazing against the bright sky, and with a clap of his wings, sent a burning blast of wind toward the dragons storming the young man. They were thrown to the floor or into the walls or stone spires densely scattered across the chamber floor, but recovered quickly enough. Indeed, too quickly; Firelash, slowed and pained from the earlier crash, tried to recover from the strenuous motion, but unbalanced and unable to reposition his wings in time, faltered in the air and, with a Nightmare's shriek, began to fall.

The Smokebreaths whirled from their previous target and began to congregate on the blazing dragon. None seemed too keen to get close to the draconic inferno, but as he fought to regain his balance, the fire-jacket burned out; his concentration was entirely consumed in maintaining flight. This gave the little gray dragons the opening they needed, and they attached themselves to his wings, legs, tail, and head, their shifting, uneven additional weight making it nigh impossible to remain aloft.

In the meantime, Javon, himself buffeted by his dragon's wing blast, regained his footing, and finished closing the distance between him and his fellow Rider. With most of the flock otherwise occupied, he hastily started digging Gojo, and Megumi, with the help of the kid's Smokebreaths, out of the metal, before his dragon's shriek abruptly arrested his focus. He looked up, and seeing the grim situation of his dragon, a situation he was powerless in any way to aid, forgot everything else. He could only stand in transfixed horror, watching as his fiery friend dropped, as if in slow motion, toward the jagged stone floor.

Suddenly, twin cries of "Here we go!" and "Zippleback, baby!" rang through the cavern. Javon saw his struggling dragon suddenly surrounded by a cloud of green gas, then an explosive fireball, which, with a resounding boom, shook the enraged Smokebreaths from off the Nightmare's body. Abruptly released from the extra load, he just had time to send a gout of fire high into the air through the crack in the roof --his distress signal-- and fold his wings protectingly around himself before striking the side of one of the taller pinnacles of rock and falling about half his length to the thankfully relatively un-spiky, though still uneven, floor beneath.

The Smokebreaths soon once again found their wings, and flocked screeching and hissing for the Zippleback and its riders; but the explosion evidently snapped Javon back to the task at hand. Seeing Firelash roll to his talons to continue fighting, apparently only further bruised, not seriously injured, he rapidly resumed digging out his friend, already planning how to get to Firelash and get them all out of there once that was finished.

Barf and Belch slipped back through the crack in the ceiling, leading the Smokebreaths out of the cavern and into the sky above. Raiju tailed them, ready to let loose an electrical storm on the pack dragons once they were in the open air.

Meanwhile, Gojo turned to look at Javon and shrugged the remaining debris off. "Man, you have no idea how good it is to see you." He got into a crouch before reaching over and pulling Megumi out of the pile and wrapping his arms around him. "You good, kid?" His eyes fastened on the bleeding shoulder wound, but Megumi wasn't looking to be coddled.

"Yes." He shoved Gojo in the chest and pulled away. "Can we go?" He looked at Javon, wondering if he had a plan or if they were just running.

"Absolutely," the Nightmare rider snapped crisply. He started to draw his sword in case he needed to knock furious Smokebreaths aside while on the move, but considering that they were still in the heart of the welding-torch dragons' territory, thought better of it. He didn't know if the whole flock had gone after the twins, but even if it had, there was no telling when they might return. Still-

"One problem at a time," he muttered softly to himself, almost a prayer. The current problem was getting to Firelash. It was hard to keep track of direction. There was the cleft in the cavern roof overhead, but between the wildly uneven floor below --a small landscape complete with ridges, valleys, bluffs, highlands, and canyons-- and the myriad spires of stone, each different than the last, some knee-high, some towering far above their heads, most somewhere in between, that did little to assist with orientation.

As they navigated as quickly as possible for where Javon thought his dragon had gone down, he cupped a hand to his mouth, hesitated, then roared his well-practiced dragon call. There was the chance that it might bring the flock back, but unless he had followed the twins and Raiju, Firelash was closer, and Javon didn't believe he had. Once they joined up with with the Nightmare, they should be able to blast their way out... he hoped. One problem at a time...

Again he roared, and an answering call came echoing back. If perceived sound direction could be trusted (which, said the negative corner of his mind, it could not; Javon chose to ignore it), they weren't far away, but weren't extremely close, either. A short distance on, they came to a small overlook, some distance above a fair fraction of the surrounding terrain. There he stopped, looking around for his dragon. With another roar and answer, they caught sight of one another, and Firelash wheeled awkwardly to quickly close the distance. However, before he quite reached them, a shadow dimmed the the bright sunlight streaming in through the roof.

And now you get to decide whether the Smokebreaths have returned, or if it's something else. 8) I realize you might not have too many gameplay options at this point, so if you need to take control of Firelash briefly to do something, that's alright (and only fair, seeing as you've let me do far more with Shiro and Kuro than I may have any business doing :P ).
