It was late and all of Berk was asleep. Braden was finding it difficult to sleep so he began to think of his time on Berk. So much had happened. One moment which stuck out in his mind the most was when Vlad told he academy of why he was alone with Volt. His parents had been killed in a house-fire set by Outcasts while they raided his homeland when he was only eleven. It was a story which haunted the academy, most of all Hita, who was redeemed after a long hard talk.

It had been six weeks since Braden and Scar had arrived at Berk. Things had settled down after Vlad and Volt had found a house for themselves. They lived next to Jay and Hita who had ended up living with eachother after they and their dragons had bonded over a mutual love of beef. Vlad had bonded with Hita also despite his and her pasts.

Braden had warmed up to the villagers, even though he was still confused by many of their customs and just the stuff they did to pass the time. Tuffnut had started a candle making company using a mixture of dragon and human earwax, and no one was sure where he got all of it... There was enough to build a house with, or so Braden presumed. He had set up shop in his "dark soggy alone place" somewhere in the centre of the island. Snotlout and Ruffnut took care of the distribution so there wasn't a morning flight that went by without hearing one of them shout advertisements to the people for a new "ultra long-lasting" candle wax. A flawless business plan- fails. Tuffnut was still in the process of making it smell like something other than... well earwax. But what astounded Braden the most was even so, Gobber didn't seem to mind.

It was summer in Berk. Well... 'summer' in that the snow could only be found on high hills. The dragons that lived on the island were up as the sun rose each morning begging their riders for a flight. Jay, Vlad and Hita would generally fly together while Braden and Hiccup would be found together with their respective dragons. They would on occasion practise that manouver of swapping dragons which they tried after that first morning, and having done so for six weeks they had almost perfected it, along with a few other tricks...

Stardust's wing had fully healed at this point and she was back to her old self. Her, along with the other dragons met most days in the arena nice and early for some training. Each of the new dragons had learned how to fly with the rest of the academy, and had picked up some tips and tricks from the other trainers. The bond between Jay and Stardust had grown fast and now rivaled that of those who had been with their dragons for much longer. The academy had also worked on their hand signals to the extent where pretty much any general command you could think of.

Braden rolled over and looked at Hiccup sleeping then to the two reunited night furies. It had been an eventful six weeks and many friends had been made, Braden was happy just to be a part of it all...

Braden woke up the following morning ready for anything. It was a warm enough day, you couldn't see your breath at least. He surveyed the room. Hiccup and Toothless were already gone, probably somewhere on the other side of the Island by then. Scar waited patiently for Braden to wake up and the moment he saw that his rider had, he was at the foot of the bed raring to go. "Just give me a minute Scar". His dragon eyed him quizzically then jumped on his bed and started tapping him playfully with his claws. Braden tried his best to shift the weight off him, but couldn't. "Fine!" Braden reluctantly shouts. Scar lumbered himself off the bed. "And so goes another day without breakfast"...

"Oh Great Odin's Ghost!" Astrid held her nose in her hands, she wore an expression of disgust on her face. "What is that smell?!" The main square in the village had livened up and of course Snotlout was trying to push product on passers-by. "It's actually a new recipe, Astrid" he flaunts some putrid candles in her direction and she winces. "It smells like rotten yak milk and sheep slurry, that's disgusting! Get them out of here. Even Stormfly's a little nautious" Snotlout squints at her "Wait, did Ruffnut tell you??" Astrid takes a step back "You mean you meant to do this?!"...

The clouds were high and thin, the sun actually warming the air for a change. Braden, atop Scar, circled the town quickly before heading out towards the sea. Scar glided gracefully over the calm ocean, while both dragon and rider took note of their surroundings. "So what do you want to do, bud?" Having lived with Hiccup and Toothless for six weeks he'd picked up some of Hiccup's mannerisms, making it even harder to tell the two apart. Scar quickly dived into the water, giving Braden no time to take a deep breath. There was a shoal of fish beneath them. Scar nodded his head toward the fish then returned to the air having broken the surface. "Ah.. Food... Typical" Braden sighed as he smiled. "But I suppose it IS breakfast..."...

"Well I figured that the smell of the earwax was the problem, was it not? Astrid?" Tuffnut had just brought a wheelbarrow full of the rancid smelling wax candles to the main square which was now swarmed with potential customers. "Yes that was the problem, but you made it worse..." Astrid gagged. "Couldn't you have used flowers or something? There's a stash of lavender over by Badger's Face..." Tuffnut grimaced "Who would want a candle that smelled like lavender??"
Astrid paused for a few seconds "EVERYBODY! Dufus"...

Hita slowly sat up from her rest, despite only being asleep for a couple of hours. She was used to her minimal sleep, however. Sharpfang looked to her with calm but wide eyes. Slowly petting the dragon, the blonde stood up and climbed upon the dragon's back, to go get breakfast.

Observing her surroundings, she would've found it to be a lovely day, if she was was in the mood for it. Terrible terrors wrestled with each other for a small fish near the ocean. The Grapple grounder seemed to think it was nonsense since one could just simply get another fish. He kept walking, however, ignoring the two. Hita suddenly looked up, seeing a tall part of the land and smirked having an idea. Sharpfang noticed this and instantly new what she wanted to do.

He made an annoyed low growl, but succumbed to her wishes. The dragon went up to the top of the peak and unfolded his long wings. Hita smiled and held on tightly, ready for the takeoff. Sharpfang smirked slightly and took off as fast as he could go. Seeing Scar and Braden, however, made him go a bit slower, hovering for a few moments, simply watching.

"At least give me a chance this time?" Braden lay his hand on Scar's neck. The dragon glanced over his shoulder shrugging his head to the sky almost smiling as he hesitated for just a moment... before taking another dive. Braden took out his hunting knife and tucked himself close to Scar as they broke the surface of the water. There was a whole world of life beneath them, fish of all shapes, sizes and colours flittered here and there in little groups, any who were aware of the fast approaching serpentine figure lunging through the blue had hidden themselves amongst beds of luscious red and green seaweed. Scar caught clods of the hapless souls per mouthful but by the time it was time to rise for a breath, Braden had caught only one but was just as pleased...

Braden eyed Hita and Sharpfang over-looking their progress. "So are you going to join us or just sit there?!" Braden smiled placing any spare fish that Scar hadn't gobbled into a large satchel "I'm gonna need a bigger carrier" he laughed to himself before being taken quickly under for another try for some food, disappearing with a roar into the deep...

Hita and Sharpfang joined the pair, and caught their fair share of fish before returning to the village to spend the remainder of the day with Jay and Stardust exploring the island and talking about dragons as usual. It had been six weeks and yet they had barely scratched the surface...

Astrid had 'procured' a bucket of Tuffnut's wax. She had done so reluctantly of course, but "the needs of the many" and all that- She flew atop the ever so graceful Stormfly towards Badger's Face; Destination: Lavender Fields...

"C'mon buddy... Toothless? Stop your pouting we'll come back another time" The pair meandered away from a field of dragon nip as they came to another clearing. "Can you smell that buddy?"....

Astrid was taking it upon herself to save the village.... from Tuffnut. Using Stormfly's flame she melted the stolen wax in the bucket, and added grinded lavender from the fields to the mix. It created a beautiful aroma nearly putting dragon and rider to sleep. "Astrid?" Hiccup and toothless peered out from the brush. "Oh hey Hiccup! Now Stormfly leave it to cool" she waved at Hiccup before rewarding her dragon with a scratch under the chin. A piece of string was lain in the lovely smelling wax with a wick coming out over the surface. "Hiccup you have to smell this" She smiled as she took the newly made candle from the bucket and ran to him holding towards his face. "Stormfly, light!" Stormfly obliged and blew a small tuft of flame at the wick lighting it, Hiccup leaned his head in to smell it, and Toothless did the same...

Braden had returned to shore briefly and collected a couple of buckets, he figured he and Scar could save the fishermen from their day's work, and maybe help the village out in the process. He spent the hours making several trips and taking the occasional break to read up on Berk's knowledge of dragons and the village's history. "Just a few more trips bud, I promise...then we eat"

The day spent fishing had been a success. Braden and Scar had filled the food stores three times over, and every dragon on Berk was pleased with their plunder. They swabbed a barrel for themselves and a second for Hiccup and Toothless who they had not seen all day. They dropped the second barrel at the house and flew with the other in search of a comfortable spot to dine in, for the sun was beginning to descend and the sky was turning a bright amber colour and growing darker...

"Astrid, that's amazing!" Hiccup was astounded at the beautiful smell coming from Astrid's lit candle. "Well... I wouldn't go that far but..." she scratched her head shyly "but... yeah" then she smiled. Stormfly and Toothless sat together and watched the pair as they smelt the lavender candle twice more each. "It'll take more than just this one to undo the damage that Tuffnut caused with his... 'scented' wickerworks' " Hiccup laughed awkwardly...

"So how is your brother working out? It feels like he's been here forever!" Hiccup edged his head up from the candle "Yeah, he's great..." There was a thoughtful tone in his voice "Hiccup what's wrong?" She looked to him and he dropped his gaze to his shoes "It's just that if he could survive... Couldn't my mom?" Hiccup glanced briefly back to Astrid "Look, Hiccup, if he can survive and find his way back here... so can she". Astrid put down the candle and hugged Hiccup, the lavender smell giving Hiccup the courage to return the favour. "All we can do is hope" Astrid released her grip and so did Hiccup they gently rested their hands on eachothers shoulders "C'mon let's head back before Berk smells that way forever" she grinned as she pushed Hiccup lightly away and walked toward her waiting dragon....

Braden sat with Scar at one of Berk's calmest beaches and fed him some fish as they looked over the ocean. From the corner of his eye he saw a small black shadow appear and then disapear at the top of a nearby cliff. After a quick glance he dismissed it as nothing and just admired the sunset as he petted Scar. There was an explosion of red yellow and orange cascading over the clouds. The two sat quietly and let their minds wander to thoughts of family and fish...
