Meatlug wagged her tail, and then, as if the words sunk in, she jumped into a defensive pose, growling ferociously. Gojo puts his glasses on, stood up, and sauntered over to Fishlegs, clapping him on the shoulder. "Look, don't worry, I'm pretty sure we can handle a couple little dragons. But, hey, if we need backup, I'd be happy to know we have someone strong and reliable on call." "I don't know if—" "Plus," Gojo lowered his voice slightly, "no one could blame you if you wanted to dig in early." He cast a sly glance at the fish already spitted and cooking. Fishlegs fidgeted. "What if we don't know you guys are in trouble?" "How about, if we're not back in, say, an hour, you can come after us? Or if you see bursts of fire and lightning in the sky, that might be a good indicator." He winked, but Fishlegs looked a little pale. "Aw, c'mon," Gojo lightly slapped his arm, "it's not like they can actually hurt us. They're just teeny little things." "Well, actually, Smokebreaths are quite strong for their size, and in large numbers, they can do some real damage—" "Fishlegs, we've got this." Gojo gave him a genuine, if not slightly cocky, smile. It was sweet that he was concerned, but, really, what danger could they be in? "Okay . . ." the other man relented. "Great!" Gojo let go of him, clapping his hands together and heading for Raiju. "Let's go catch some thieves!" He jumped into the saddle, and his dragon took to the air. Tuffnut snorted. "Yeah, you're just saying that to make yourself look innocent." It didn't matter to him that Gojo was already out of earshot. "Can we go?" Ruffnut, who had taken the opportunity to mount her saddle, called to her brother. Unfortunately for everyone, Tuffnut's mind had already gone down a rabbit hole. "Hmmm," he fingered his chin, "maybe we can catch him in the act. He won't have the element of surprise anymore. I wonder how much he's bribed these Smokebreaths to do his bidding. . . . I don't know how he does it, but by Thor by the end of this, I will!" He smacked a fist into his palm. "Bro!" Ruffnut raised her voice and tossed a pebble at Tuffnut, grazing his forehead. "Hey!" he exclaimed. "I was having a revelation over here!" "We're gonna lose him if we don't get up there." That got Tuffnut moving. He ran and jumped into Belch's saddle. "Take to the skies, my two-headed vessel of destruction!" he whooped as the Zippleback flapped into the air. Fishlegs shook his head at the twins and went to sit by the fire with Meatlug at his side. "Good luck, guys." |

"Thanks, Fishlegs," Javon smiled. "Don't worry. We've all got our dragons to protect us, and distinctive distress signals should we need help. We'll fill you in if we notice any unique behaviors." He then mounted his dragon, and with a sweep of the great wings, was airborne. "Well, girl, looks like it's just you and me... again." The Gronckle's replying growl was intertwined with a whine. "Aw, it's okay, Meatlug. We're just not built for the whole 'charging head-first into potential danger' thing, y'know? Besides, while we're here, maybe you can try some unique minerals. Who knows? You might just find a new favorite." Fishlegs tossed a small stone, which the dragon scampered after and snatched out of mid-air. "Now, let's see how those fish are doing," he murmured to himself. He checked them, then sat down next to the fire again. Meatlug came up and sat beside him. He looked in the direction the others had gone. "I wonder what they're doing... What do you think, girl?" he asked. Once they were in the air, it didn't take long for the Monstrous Nightmare and his rider to catch up with the twins. "Hey, Ruff, Tuff, take the lead!" he called. "You guys know where you ran into the Smokebreaths," or so he hoped, anyway, "and that would be a good place to start. Don't know what Gojo thinks he's doing way out there, but we can call him back." Javon nudged his dragon. "If you would, please?" he requested. A decidedly smug expression crossed the Nightmare's face, and he bellowed in the direction of the Skrill a number of lengths distant. |

Raiju threw out his wings to catch the wind and let it blow him back to the others. "Took you long enough." Gojo grinned at them, pulling Raiju a little further behind so the twins could take the lead. Luckily, they weren't totally useless and were able to steer the party in the direction of the attack. They landed in the forest where the little dragons had escaped, which was completely devoid of Smokebreaths now. "Uhhh," Ruffnut took in their empty surroundings, "now what?" "Too bad we don't have Stormfly," Gojo mused. "Our best bet might be to lure them in with something shiny and follow 'em back to the den." "Don't look at us. You have all our stuff!" Tuffnut pointed at his eyes, then at Gojo to let him know his every move was being watched. Gojo ignored him and dismounted, pulling the knife that he'd reclaimed earlier out of his satchel and unsheathing it. He placed it in a spot where the sunlight filtered through the trees and reflected off its surface. Then they all staked out behind bushes and trees to wait. Of course, one shiny object wouldn't be an immediate magnet, but hopefully the Smokebreaths were still in the general vicinity and noticed it soon enough. About a half hour later, Gojo was getting bored with the stakeout. He was sitting on the ground with his back against a tree and idly swinging his glasses in a circle by one of its arms when he saw a dark cloud shoot out of the trees. It branched off into two waves as it circled its prey, breaking and merging until it darted for the knife and took off. "Let's go!" Gojo exclaimed. He jumped to his feet and was about to put his glasses back on when he felt them get ripped out of his hand. "Hey—!" A little smoke cloud retreated, following its buddy. "Oh no, you did not!" He whistled and Raiju came running. As soon as he hopped in the saddle, the Skrill lifted off the ground and flew low after the smoke cloud. He could hear the others, probably the twins, hollering behind him. Whatever. They could catch up. He urged Raiju to speed up and in no time he was right behind the cloud. It was quite small, he realized. There couldn't be many Smokebreaths. Although, he was sure more would be waiting at the nest. The little dragons led him to a cave and disappeared inside. The entrance was too small for Raiju, so he had the Skrill land right outside and dismounted. Since the others hadn't made it yet, he patted his dragon's head and said, "Give 'em the signal." Raiju turned around and shot a bolt in the air to alert the other Riders while Gojo ducked his head and entered the cave. It was a tight squeeze through a tunnel for several feet before opening up into a wider, albeit still small, grotto. Junk was strewn everywhere, yet it somehow felt like organized chaos in a way an animal wouldn't arrange it. And to make things even stranger, there were no Smokebreaths in sight. One would expect them to be hanging from the ceiling and dive bombing him right about now, but instead he was greeted with silence. That is, until his foot bumped into something and a resounding clang echoed throughout the whole cave. He cringed and looked down. It was Fishlegs's helmet. Well, now they definitely knew he was here. His first instinct was to reach for his katana in case a swarm came barreling at him, but then his earlier conversation with Javon replayed in his mind, and he stopped himself. Something was wrong, anyway. It was eerily quiet. There was no way they didn't hear— His intuition told him to turn to his right just before he saw movement out of the corner of his eye. In one swift move, he pivoted on the ball of his foot and drew his katana, lunging at his attacker and pinning them to the wall with his sword at their throat. Their weapon clatter on the floor. Then everything was silent and Gojo found himself staring into the steely eyes of a young boy . . . a child who showed no sign of fear being held at sword-point. |

As the Smokebreaths struck and Golo sprang into action, Javon coaxed his dragon into the air. "There they go! After 'em!" His dragon's wings crashed through brush, and then they were in open air. As Gojo and Raiju could be seen chasing one group, Javon and Firelash flew after another. There was a third; he yelled for the Twins to follow them, not certain they'd hear, but hoping they'd do so regardless. These Smokebreaths, he noted, were fast. Faster than most other Smokebreaths they'd encountered, it seemed. Or maybe Firelash was just tired from the flight over. It was impossible to tell over unfamiliar terrain. Still they followed, weaving through rocks and trees, ducking through natural arches carved through the stone that composed most of Wreck Reef Island. Suddenly, Firelash halted. From somewhere not too far away came a single thunderclap. A glance at the sky proved that it wasn't just weather; the only clouds were fluffy and white. Which meant that it was either Raiju, or --a nervous shiver went through Javon's body-- a wild Skrill; they were supposed to be fairly common on this island, and could be extremely ill-tempered, even when not trying to establish a claim to a piece of territory. Rider and dragon, as one, looked toward the sound's source. The viking glanced forward again, only to find that the Smokebreaths they had been chasing had disappeared. "I... guess we'd better check that out," the young man decided with slight hesitation. "Either way, someone needs or will need our help." Firelash chuffed in agreement and wheeled. Javon let him; the dragon always had a better grasp of sound and location than he did. Before long, they could see a familiar dark-blue dragon standing next to a crack in a rock wall. They were just about to start descending when abruptly, something hit them. Then next thing the viking knew, he was plummeting toward the ground among a cacophony of upset, roaring dragons --his own and a Zippleback,-- two human voices he wished at that moment he could strangle, and a tangled up confusion of familiar fiery scales, greeny-yellow scales, horns, wings, fire, gas, talons, and sparks. "YOU IDIOTS!!" he exploded. "Can't you WATCH where you're FLYING?!? FIRELASH!!" The Monstrous Nightmare finally managed to extricate himself from the jumble of Hideous Zippleback, and with a furious parting roar, aimed his blazing body to catch his falling rider before the rocks did. Javon slammed into his dragon's underbelly --Firelash had rolled in midair to give his human a softer surface to land on, remembering to extinguish his fire there a mere heartbeat or two before the impact-- with barely a dragon's-length between him and the ground, where he lay desperately trying to breathe, having had the wind knocked out of him. The Nightmare did its best to hold him in place with its legs and maneuver to be able to maintain flight, but they didn't have enough air. With a tremendous, sickening thud, they crashed into the ground, skidding along it for several yards before stopping. Javon, with a ragged gasp, finally caught his breath, and lay panting heavily for a couple seconds, until a deep groan from his dragon under him prompted him to roll off and quickly make his shaky way to collapse next to the noble beast's head. "Are... are you... okay there, Firelash?" he asked anxiously. The Nightmare cracked open a bleary eye, and with effort, lifted its head from the ground. He blinked a few times, then shook his head. His gaze slowly cleared, and gradually moving bruised muscles, he managed to roll and stand. Javon stood, too. Firelash shook himself again, and with a markedly tremulous but reassuring purr, gave the man a quick lick. "Oh, thank Thor," the viking breathed sincerely. "Nothing broken?" The dragon gingerly spread its wings to the full, took a couple tentative steps, swept its neck and tail back and forth a few times, then, satisfied, returned to the regular standing posture. "Okay," Javon began. "Let's-" the sound of a very unhappy Zippleback somewhere relatively nearby interrupted him. He glanced in the general direction, then scowled, squared his shoulders, and, looking back to his dragon, continued, "Let's get to Gojo and see what's up." Whatever the muttonheads or their muttonheaded dragon was dealing with, it was their fault and their mess to clean up, not his. He tried to suppress the twinge of guilt he felt as he pivoted decisively on his heel and, left-hand fingers curled tightly around Firelash's nasal horn, headed back toward the cloven cliff face. It didn't take them too long to get there, and Javon stepped up to inspect the crack. "Hm, way too small for a dragon your size, I'm afraid, Firelash. Mind staying out here while I go in?" The Nightmare evidently did not. "Okay," the viking smiled quickly. "High alert, though; I don't really know what I'm walking into, here." The dragon blew a puff of smoke toward him. "Okay, okay, I'm going!" Javon slipped into the narrow gap, glad once again for his slender build. It came in handy for this kind of navigation. After several feel, the stony walls and ceiling opened out. The young man's eyes were not yet adjusted to the darkness, so he couldn't make out much of his surroundings, but he had other senses. The area had a relatively empty feel, and his ears told him there were, surprisingly, no little gray dragons scampering about over piles of scrap metal. Beyond his own breathing, he could hear another's; Gojo? Probably. But... what was he doing? It sounded like he was just standing somewhere ahead and to the right. The viking turned that way, and his breath seemed to catch in his throat. The strong midday light that filtered weakly through the craggy tunnel behind him was caught on a naked curved blade. Several different thoughts on what he should do at that moment crowded into his head, but only one really made sense. "Gojo? What's going on here??" he demanded sharply. |

The racket the others had made outside gave Gojo a heads up, so he wasn't surprised when he heard Javon's voice. He didn't dare take his eyes off the boy when he spoke. "He tried to sneak up on me." "You were chasing my friends." The boy's voice was monotone. He wasn't angry or cowed, just stating a fact. Gojo smirked. This kid had some nerve. "You encourage your friends to go swiping often?" The boy shrugged as best he could, but it caused a pained expression to cross his face momentarily. "It's their nature." Gojo started chuckling, which evidently caught the kid off guard by his confused expression. "Oh, man. You're gonna be fun, I can tell." |

(We'd love to have you join! I'm sure you could do that if you wanted to. I'm not sure if the Light Fury would necessarily fit into this timeline since it's RTTE, but we can probably figure something out if you really want that. Or you could add some original characters or even rip them off from other media like I'm doing. ![]() |

Javon, already confused as to what was going on, was made even more so when an unfamiliar voice spoke out of the darkness to his right. He peered in that direction, trying to make out the speaker. His eyes were beginning to adjust; he could make out the tall outline of Gojo's figure in the darkness, but no details and nothing beyond. He gave up trying to see the other person, instead asking in the same tone, "Who's that? And what of the Smokebreaths?" A spark in his eyes, could it have been seen, suggested answers had better be coming forthwith. ((@ToothlessNightFury, yeah, that would probably be fine. What I meant by "fan Furies" was the kind of thing I see allllllllllllllllllllllllll the time on the SoD revival Discord servers (and really, all across the fandom, but predominantly there): Just a Night/Light Fury with some kind of "special" ability and/or pattern/color and/or extra spikes/fins/teeth/etc. tacked on because Odin forbid my oh-so-extremely "creative" subspecies be not uNiQuE!! ...Yeah, can you tell I'm thoroughly sick and tired of this trope? ![]() ![]() |

Gojo decided it was safe to sheath his weapon. Then he gripped the boy by the collar and dragged him into the the faint light in front of Javon. "Kid, Javon. Javon, Kid. . . . Hey, what is your name, anyway?" The boy looked up at him incredulously. "You really expect me to trust you with my name?" Gojo shrugged. "Well, if we do decide to kill you, at least we can give your family our condolences." The boy narrowed his eyes. Why was he a magnet for stupid people? The guy seemed to have let his guard down. Maybe he could run now. Make a break for his sword. Then again, he remembered the lightning speed with which the man had pounced on him before and thought better of it. "I'm just messin'!" Gojo ruffled the kid's hair with his free hand. He did not appreciate this one bit and swatted at Gojo. Thankfully, after that, a switch seemed to flip in Snow-Hair's mind, and he went serious. "So, where are the Smokebreaths?" "Look around." Upon quick glance, Gojo realized two pairs of glowing eyes were silently scrutinizing their every move from above. ". . . Oh. But where's the rest of them?" "Hunting, I suppose." Gojo looked back at Javon. "Well, there you have it. This is No-Name—" He pointed down at the boy— "and the Smokebreaths are hunting according to him. Whether we should believe that or not . . ." He shrugged. |

"Hmm..." Javon inspected the lad, stepping out of the path of light to let it illuminate him to what little extent it did. "I guess we should take him to the others and see what they think. But first, if this is the Smokebreaths' den, we should collect their stuff... I guess." He ground his teeth; he still was not feeling at all kindly disposed toward the Twidiots and their brainless Zippleback. His snapping gaze pierced the boy again. "Do you know where it all is, Kid? If so, that'll make things quicker. If not, I'll go get a torch. Either way," and he withdrew one of his throwing knives from their pouch, holding it to catch the glint of the light on its blade, "I wouldn't advise trying to get away. We don't want to hurt you, but we do want to learn more about you, and we know how to use these weapons." |
