As to question 1, have not seen the movie, but in the opening flying scene clip, it looks like hiccup "hooks" the tail into open mode for "solo gliding". Perhaps it is more similar to what he built toothless in gift of the nightfury that allows him to solo fly? |

Since this is the second movie, the answers to most questions like those would probably be answered in HTTYD 3. |

I'm going to take a punt here and say that the third movie will not explain how Drago manages to make Toothless fly. That just seems like a fairly random detail to come back to when it's only immediately relevant to the second movie. Solo gliding isn't flying; it's falling with style. You can't glide all the way back to Berk, especially since he had to ascend in the first place. |

Number of times I've watched the trailer: 18. My pet peeve: people who refer to complete strangers by their first name. The correct ways to refer to a "John Smith" whom you have never met are Smith, Mr Smith, or John Smith. Not "John". He's not your buddy. | |

Yet we know Hiccup had successfully constructed a tail fin mechanism (in GotNF) that permitted Toothless to fly unaided. Presumably he would have incorporated those designs into subsequent revisions, in case he should ever need to relinquish control to Toothless. Granted, that doesn't explain how Drago knew how to operate the tail fin mechanism. |

Toothless expressed his opinion of solo flying quite concisely, if you ask me. It doesn't seem like a good idea on Hiccup's part to press the issue. Although frankly, it's utterly unnecessary in regards to the Drago-riding-Toothless problem to even have a solo flying mechanism. If he can operate that mechanism, then he can, in principle, operate the entire thing. The thing is that there's no way that rod's going to hold up against his bloody great foot. |
