One thing that stood out to me about Drago was this: I hated him. Not that he was a bad character or anything, I just hated Drago for how he treated Hookfang, and for how he did that to Toothless and Stoick. For the first time, I was hoping to Odin almighty that we would see him die. I have never felt that way about a movie villain before, and I feel they did a fantastic job with him because of that. That being said, I am also interested to see more about him. Is that really a night fury hide? Was it a night fury that took his arm? Do he and Toothless possibly have some sort of history? |

So many unanswered questions... I really hope a short film might answer them. Edit: Drago probably wouldn't have a history with Toothless; one with his parents would be more likely, I think. |

When I saw the movie today, one of the thoughts that came to me is that Drago was a complete maniac. I mean, you can really see his intentions, that he wanted to control the dragons to help him conquer the world. But I don't think I understand his motives. Maybe that might be explained in HTTYD3. |

for me, that was always the big draw back of Drago. Like yeah, he's a cool villain and everything, but he lacks depth and motivation. For now, until he's fleshed out more (hopefully in HTTYD 3, like you said) he's just another cookie-cutter villain in a kids movie to me. |

I don't feel that Drago is a cookie-cutter villain though, because sure, he lacks motives, but he isn't that kind of...how do you say it...villain that is dumb, which would be my interpretation of a cookie-cutter villain. He really gives out that feeling that he's nuts and menacing, that already sets him apart from most villains we see in kids movies, which they are, frankly, not scary at all. |

I found Drago crazy, menacing and someone you could definitely be scared of. As for his backstory and motives, I know they didn't go into it deeply, but I think what he tells Hiccup on the battlefield is very revealing, at least for me it was. He says he's suffered greatly because of dragons. His family taken, his village burned, he lost his arm. He also says something along the lines of how he used to live in fear. Now this is just how I'm looking at it, but I think his motivation IS fear. He used to be afraid, he got tired of it, and has spent the rest of his life forcing people to feel what he did. Because I think Hiccup made a very important point when he called out Drago for conquering dragons to control people not dragons. He is a maniac and he's obsessed with having people suffer as he did, maybe because it makes him feel a little better about his own fears. And he is still afraid. I could see it when Toothless defied him and the Alpha and went back to Hiccup and the rest of the time he was being bested. All in all, what I'm saying is that I believe Drago's motive is fear, plain and simple. And I do expect them to go more into it in the third movie. Like we'll learn more about why and how he is what he is. |

You know, I would have bought the fear angle, if it wasn't for the fact that Hiccup immediately calls him out on it, saying that he's basically using dragons purely as a tool to control people... and Drago agrees. |
Number of times I've watched the trailer: 18. My pet peeve: people who refer to complete strangers by their first name. The correct ways to refer to a "John Smith" whom you have never met are Smith, Mr Smith, or John Smith. Not "John". He's not your buddy. | |

Yea but by using the dragons to control people, he's putting the fear he used to (and probably still does to some extent) feel onto those he conquers. I think that's his obsession: making everyone feel what he felt. Because seeing other people weak and scared would make him feel powerful and brave. And he uses the dragons because hates them and by using him the way that he is, they're as much enslaved to him as the people. His agreeing with Hiccup just shows you how sinister he is. He knows what he's doing, and he likes it. You can see that by the way he casually shrugs and walks away when he sees that Stoick was killed. |

You're confusing method with motive. Yes, Drago uses fear (as does, you know, pretty much every single villain ever), but that's entirely different from being motivated by it. Look to the Scarecrow for an example of the latter. Drago agreeing with Hiccup is basically admitting that only a complete idiot would actually believe that excuse he just gave about fear and all that, even if the events described might be true. Oh, and of course, Drago is sinister and hateful and all that, but again, so are the vast majority of villains. There's really nothing interesting there. |
