Honestly, during the first movie and the TV Series, I never saw the scar on his face, although I read several fanfictions refering to it long before the second movie came out.

Depends on how big a screen on which you're seeing the movie. This movie has sooo much detail that if you can't see the scar, you're missing quite a bit ^_^

For some reason I failed to notice it on a massive IMAX screen....

May be I have an eye for details, but I noticed the scar in the first minute of the first movie. It's clearly visible both in the movie and in the series. I always wanted to know the story behind that and I have to tell you, I expected something better than just a random scratch.

And one of Hiccup's burns that he got after the battle with the Green Death was in the same place as his scar, so it makes it more noticeable.
When I first saw Hiccup's scar in Dragons 2, I thought that it was just the scar from one of his burns. But then I saw his scar in the first film, before the battle with the Green Death, and I wanted to know how he had got it. I think it's good that they explained it in the sequel.

I actually only noticed it not long after the first movie as someone made an in-depth tumblr post about it xD So when the first scene with Valka came around, I wasn't too confused as I realised that's what she recognised.
