SIGH... I hate it when people are against death in books or movies. It's a totslly natrusl thing--I mean we all are going to die someday) so why be so agaisnt it?
It makes no sense to me to see people act like this about death...
I roll my eyes about people like this.
I'm almost sure, that this is not about death, but about dying. I don't like "modern" books and movies just because authors like to show us a fearsome, brutal and painful death. And for me it is not a surprise, that people don't want Stoick's death - they're scared, that his death will be in "GoT-Style". I can agree with that - i HATE how people dies in GoT. There is enough "common" deaths in real life - i think about painful and awful death.
When i'm coming to the world in books or movies i like to see brave death - especially for most important characters in the story. It is in opposite for sad life, but always gives me a courage.
Well, no death in HTTYD is going to be as overtly violent as any death in Game of Thrones, because the former is PG, while the latter is MA (adjust ratings as appropriate for countries outside of Australia). You tend to shoot around the blood and gore in children's films.
Yes, i know I just tried to say, why probably people don't want Stoicks death - I do not expect blood and gore in HTTYD - but people can be afraid that Stoick's death will be "typical" and even meaningless, despite the fact that there will be no blood and gore.

I agree, stories don't always have to reflect real life. I don't want to see Stoick die, but I'll accept it if he dies in a noble way.

"There's something you must remember when riding a dragon. There's no manual, no safety harness, no guarantees when you're on one of these beasts. All you have is the wind in your hair, and the clothes on your back. The only thing between you and that dragon is your saddle. You need to hold onto it for dear life, as that creature takes you the skies. That, is dragon riding."

Spoiler: click to toggle Maybe the reason why I don't like someone dying is that I'm actually afraid of dying. And seeing someone dying right in front of my face reminds me that death is unavoidable, that we all needed to die at some point at life.

I'm reminded of a quote I read somewhere, something to the effect of, "We don't watch movies to feel safe; we watch movies to feel safely."* In other words, film (and, I think, fiction and art in general) serves as a safe outlet for all our emotions, including the negative ones, and yes, that includes fear. Why do you think horror continues to be a popular genre in its various forms? Why do you think Toy Story 3 was such a huge success in spite of (well, rather, because of) it's legendary tear jerking abilities?
And you know what? I bet if there is a scene that causes you to have an intense emotional reaction like that, you'll find yourself drawn back to it time and time again. I've certainly found that.
*I have my own twist on this idea, a memo to film makers everywhere: if you're not making me cry, you're not doing your job. It is probably, however, a tad too specific.

Number of times I've watched the trailer: 18.
My pet peeve: people who refer to complete strangers by their first name. The correct ways to refer to a "John Smith" whom you have never met are Smith, Mr Smith, or John Smith. Not "John". He's not your buddy.

Spoiler: click to toggle I can't imagine how they'd be able to play up the significance of Snotlout's death. His relationship with Hiccup (in Dreamworks' universe) has always felt anaemic, given his character seems relegated to your run-of-the-mill schoolyard bully; he's more nuisance than threat.
Contrast that with Cowell's universe, where Snotlout's vitriol was borderline psychopathic—but then we were treated to that cathartic moment of revelation and resolution. In one fell swoop, we went from hating his guts to cheering him on, and thus the waterworks were primed.
But in Dreamworks' universe, Snotlout is more comic relief than anti-villain, and so it'd be difficult to pull off that calibre of character development. His death may be sad, but it won't be poignant.

What should I write on my signature? Hmm...
I am a Httyd, Gravity Falls and Portal (One and two) fan.
I'm also a bookworm and an introvert.
That was pretty random, but that's me summed up in two sentences.
