I LOVED Eret. I was so excited to finally see him and he did live up to my expectations. But I do wish they could have elaborated more on his backstory. With his father, working for Drago and getting that scar, you know its gotta be interesting. In fact, I think they could probably do a whole movie on Eret and what his life was like before running into Hiccup.
As for his "change of heart" I don't think it was too quick or anything like that. He clearly didn't like Drago or respect him. In fact, when he showed Hiccup and Astrid the scare he received from Drago, I got the distinct impression that he hates him. He worked for him out of fear and maybe necessity, though we didn't really get to see what that was. Maybe something to do with his father? So no loyalty there.
And if you're worried about his change of attitude toward dragons, uh hello, the whole of Berk used to kill them and now its completely different. If the Berkians could change, why not Eret? And he had a reason to change his attitude there: Stormfly saved him. Chances are, Eret's the kind of guy who has never had anyone stick up for him for anything. Drago's mark on his chest isn't the only scar he has. He's probably always had to fight for himself and no one else, because trust isn't common in his world. So having a dragon, one that didn't even have a real reason to protect him, do so, was world-altering for him.
So yea, I personally loved Eret. Adored him really. He had a charming side to him and I think they did a fairly good job of presenting him. I definitely want to see him in the 3rd film!

I thoroughly enjoyed Eret, but wish they explored his character just a bit more. I'm hoping to see him in the third installment and know more about his background.
I agree, I want to know more about him.
"There's something you must remember when riding a dragon. There's no manual, no safety harness, no guarantees when you're on one of these beasts. All you have is the wind in your hair, and the clothes on your back. The only thing between you and that dragon is your saddle. You need to hold onto it for dear life, as that creature takes you the skies. That, is dragon riding."

Wow, you summed up everything I was about to say! XD That's a great analysis of Eret. I wonder what his life was like too. What do you think his pop was like?

HTTYD 2 is too short to fit everything and definitely should be longer. The story was amazing, but there were not enough time for background - especially for Drago. I can easily imagine more scenes that should fit for the movie.
Maybe they want just to stimulate our imagination and leave some untold story (for HTTYD3/shorts? Short episode about Eret?).

I didn't like him much. His change of heart was just too quick for me. I understand the logic and all, but really, I just wouldn't trust him.
I've been on the wall about him, too. I feel like he changed his mind and helped the gang only because he was trying to save his own skin. I was also super surprised when Hiccup gave Eret Stoick's dragon. I thought that was a bit much for someone who he'd just met. But maybe I'm bitter over that fact that Stoick's dead who knows.

I thought it was a bit short, but it didn't bother me. But like you said, maybe they did that to get our imaginations going, which is a good thing.

I feel like the reason they made HTTYD 2 so short (even though it was actually longer than the 1st) was because they wanted to get right to the point. I think it would have made the movie even better if they had added a bit of back story to especially Eret. I think he would have been more likable if we knew his back story.

Oh, I defiantly agree! I'm glad they kept it to the point. I'm thinking that, if the fourth season follows the 2nd film, they'll dive deeper into his past.

I'm not sure what to think of Eret's father, but clearly he left some sort of influence on his son. Whether good or bad, its hard to tell. Did the first Eret teach his son dragon-trapping? Is he the reason Eret works for Drago? I feel there are a lot of questions there, and no way of really having them answered unless you want to come up with your own story. There are TONS of questions surrounding Eret, which is part of what I like about him. I'm not kidding when I say I think they could (and perhaps should) do a movie all about him

I agree, I want to know more. I have a theory; His father taught him dragon trapping, and then he was hired by Drago. He got killed, and so his son had to take his place as Drago's top dragon trapper.
I'm thinking his relationship with his dad was a little rough. Like maybe his dad was stern and tough on him.

I hope we'll learn more about him in the future.
