To be honest, I don't see that stereotype perpetuated very much among professional critics. Go look at the the reviews for pretty much anything from Miyazaki, Pixar pre-Cars 2, or even HTTYD to a certain extent, and you'll that those movies are praised for being more than a mere diversion for children rather than penalized for it.

As for that particular "rotten" review, I feel like he could have elaborated a bit more as to why he didn't think it worked, but I didn't get the sense that he had any sort of vendetta against the movie.
Come death. Come suffering. I will not live in fear. In this fleeting life where time escapes us, the path of least resistance is a slow quiet death. I'd rather burn out than fade away.

According to a lot of people:

"Slant gives every movie 2/4, just ignore their reviews."

"Slant also gave a negative review to 22 Jump Street."

"They also gave "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" a 1.5/4 rating..."

lol

Looking through his review history, I see less sign of that (there are plenty of acclaimed and popular films that have a high rating from this critic), and more that he is legitimately tough on films. Overly tough? Entirely possible, but that hardly makes him a troll critic.
Number of times I've watched the trailer: 18.

My pet peeve: people who refer to complete strangers by their first name. The correct ways to refer to a "John Smith" whom you have never met are Smith, Mr Smith, or John Smith. Not "John". He's not your buddy.

But he still, dislikes good movies. Just like Kyle Smith.

If I recall right, RottenTomatoes' scoring system is percentage based, so maybe it will rise up a bit when there are a lot more fresh reviews. But sadly, I think that HTTYD2 is not going to be 100% anymore. But 92% is still good though.
Nothing is in this signature, except this sentence describing that there is nothing in this signature.

Seriously, I, [INSERT USERNAME HERE] have nothing to say here. Continue on with your viewing of not-so regularly scheduled posts.

A true troll critic would either hate everything, or go against popular opinion on everything (hate the popular, like the unpopular). This reviewer does neither. He happens to dislike some movies you like. That's a very different thing.

Edit: I forgot to mention that that particular critics is in alignment with the Tomatometer 83% of the time. That hardly suggests someone who hates good movies, so much as someone who probably dislikes a few high-profile movies, most likely blockbusters.

Well, that's not what people are saying. Most of them do not care about their reviews. So I think I shouldn't eiether.

This guy's reviews (or at least, the scores he gives, divided into the "fresh" and "rotten" categories) are fairly standard (again, he agrees with the Tomatometer 83% of the time, so he's hardly aiming to be contrarian), so you should care about his reviews about as much as you would about most reviews. That may well, for all I know, mean you don't give a damn about them, but if that's the case, then this seems like an odd topic for you to be on.

Of course, if he's a lousy reviewer, then that would be a perfectly good reason to disregard what he says, but that doesn't appear to be the case here. He's no Roger Ebert, but the guy has a point, and makes some level of argument to back it up. That's basically all a reviewer has to be. He's absolutely nothing special, but he hardly appears to be terrible, based on the reviews I've looked at.

And now they feel they have enough for a consensus: "Exciting, emotionally resonant, and beautifully animated, How to Train Your Dragon 2 builds on its predecessor's successes just the way a sequel should." ^_^

Obviously more reviews will be coming in, but the fact that there are 21 fresh and only 1 rotten is a pretty good indicator that the percentage isn't likely to change much.
