I have no interest in seeing them keep churning out content just for the sake of keeping the franchise "alive" indefinitely. For me, this would include shorts and TV series as well, but especially more movies past the originally planned trilogy. Closure is good in stories, and from the few hints he's given it seems like Dean has already envisioned a good way to achieve it. I'd hate to see that get ruined by studio executives out to make another dollar. Although the tone is certainly different, the Shrek franchise is still a good example of what can go wrong with too many sequels, especially since it was/is also from DreamWorks.
Come death. Come suffering. I will not live in fear. In this fleeting life where time escapes us, the path of least resistance is a slow quiet death. I'd rather burn out than fade away.

not sure.
Depends.
I like the idea of things ending with a 3rd movie.

as much as i don't want httyd to end 4 movies would just ruin it. (kinda like with Spy Kids)

Well I suppose they ended Madagascar with three- and those just kept improving as they went on and I really wanted a fourth by the time I saw the third, maybe it'll be the same for HTTYD ? :S

As good as I thought the last Madagascar movie was and wouldn't mind seeing another, I also wouldn't be too bothered if it was only 'meh'. However, I care about HTTYD much, much more and would be devastated if they made and fourth and screwed it up. Don't get me wrong, I love Madagascar but I'd care considerably more if HTTYD was thrown on the 'Franchises that should have stopped when they were good' pile. All things, as much as you'd love for them to continue, need to end at some point.

I have very similar feelings.
I even think that all these HTTYD products - for example all these foods with HTTYD brand - it makes a good movie looks like a "just another movie to make movie". Wall clocks, linens, figurines, books, gadgets... I know that DW wants to earn as much as possible, but idealistic part of me says no to something like that. Especially that on every product you can see the same pictures...

I seriously don't understand you people. 4 movies is always better than 3 IMO. It's not like the quality of the fourth one will change the quality of the first three. And it may even turn out to be better.
The thing is, if Katzenberg had his way, the fourth one actually would change the quality of the third one. He isn't suggesting simply tacking another chapter on to the end of what Dean already has planned, he wants Dean to find a way to split the third movie in to two films. If that were to happen it would be basically dooming the third film to be full of suck and the fourth film to probably not be that great either. How many other franchises have tried the same money grubbing trick with the same results? It's getting old.

I've been thinking about this though and in my opinion, the second and third films could have been their own trilogy. The first film could have been a standalone kind of "origin" story, and then they could have had an entirely separate trilogy to tell hiccup's story as an adult. If they had planned from the very beginning of the second films conception to make it in to three sequels and not two, then I'd be all for it! But now that the second movie is done, its way too late to make that decision now. And I really, really hope they don't. What they have going now is perfectly fine. Dean knows what he's doing and I trust that his original plan to finish the story in just one more film is the right one.

I agree with what others here have already said. A forth movie would be a mistake because it would force more material onto what has already been written as a trilogy, which could only end up hurting the franchise. As much as I love this series, I'd rather have a great trilogy than a bunch of mediocre sequels that are only there for the money.

Yes, that would be the best concept for a quadrilogy. When Mr. Katzenberg had said earlier that he want a 4th movie, we would probably have one cohesive story instead of multiple single parts.

I heartily agree. I don't want to see the same mess as when they split the "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequel from one into two.

"Dean knows what he's doing" -- keep that in mind.

On a serious note if they DID make a fourth movie and screwed it up totally, it would ruin the whole franchise for me, I don't know why.

Kind of like Alpha and Omega 2 and Open season 2 and 3. I mean, they weren't 'GREAT' films, but the first ones were okay, even decent enough, but the sequels were just....No.
