Dreamworks did something interesting with their new software--they made their characters' facial and body expressions so complex, so dense, and so true-to-the-mark, that I'm wondering if some of the reviewers have trouble reading faces, as I do, and missed this. Being autistic, I have trouble reading Human as a Second Language. But lucky for me, I have a dictionary:

First FACS sighting: Valka's pupils dilating and contracting rapidly. Can't say where because it would be a spoiler.

Also significant are the gestures not appearing in FACS. Hiccup resting his cheek in his mom's hand. THAT IS DRAGONESE!



Did I mention that character animators are awesome?

The animation was beautiful.
"There's something you must remember when riding a dragon. There's no manual, no safety harness, no guarantees when you're on one of these beasts. All you have is the wind in your hair, and the clothes on your back. The only thing between you and that dragon is your saddle. You need to hold onto it for dear life, as that creature takes you the skies. That, is dragon riding."

That is amazing! I will have to look out for this when I see the movie and would probably have never noticed this without forward notice! Thanks for posting this! :)

Um, which reviewers do you think have Asperger's, and what exactly is your evidence for this? MMental illness isn't a joke, you know (well, except to the extent that anything can be a joke in the hands of a sufficiently good comedian and/or writer).
Number of times I've watched the trailer: 18.

My pet peeve: people who refer to complete strangers by their first name. The correct ways to refer to a "John Smith" whom you have never met are Smith, Mr Smith, or John Smith. Not "John". He's not your buddy.

I'm autistic/have Asperger's (depending on which mental health professionals you ask and which day you ask it) It isn't mental illness, and if you take bullies into account, I'm well aware of these "jokes" of which you speak. This isn't one of them. And I'm not going to point out the review. I just found myself thinking, as I read it, "You know, if I weren't in the habit of really studying this stuff...."

And I appreciate your pointing this out. Shows you are a lot more considerate than some.

You're welcome! And there are SO many more. This is one technique they used to get so much content and meaning into the movie, and to express so much character development in as little time as they had.

Check out Hiccup's reaction to meeting Valka. Only one of the reactions is in the preview--the "microexpression" limbic reaction. (They actually increased the intensity of this one so that it's no longer a microexpression) Just after that one, in the movie, you get the full-on OMG expression, when the rest of his brain catches up with his limbic system.

Compare that to Jack Frost's "You can see me!?" where they first practiced that.

Ok, I'm off for a couple of days. Back with perhaps more, because finding these is really fun for me. Feel free to post your own finds.
