I'm with all of you here.. 2 years doesn't seem like enough time to even get the strength of the story and the animation together....

And as the book fans already know about the ending I really want them to excel with the ending of their story, not rush it. Please DW give more time... (Though that would be bad on my schedule so this is a double-edged sword).

Honestly, there's nothing to worry about from a business perspective. It will make plenty of money (not that I really see why I should care, since there should most definitely not be any sequels after this), and is a more reliable money-maker than anything else Dreamworks have in the pipeline as far as I know, with the possible exception of Kung Fu Panda 3 (which I'm guessing is coming out in 2015).

From an artistic standpoint, there's no real need to make any leaps forward in animation (honestly, CG has been able to do the vast majority of things more than well enough for about a decade now), and DeBlois's known that he's making a third film for the past four years or so, so he's had more than enough time to get the basic framework of the story down in his head at least.

In other words, any worries that we have about HTTYD 3 should not be related to when it's coming out. As for me, I'm worrying about one film at a time. I'm seeing HTTYD 2 tomorrow, so then I'll be able to comment on what we should really be worrying about.
Number of times I've watched the trailer: 18.

My pet peeve: people who refer to complete strangers by their first name. The correct ways to refer to a "John Smith" whom you have never met are Smith, Mr Smith, or John Smith. Not "John". He's not your buddy.

I agree, despite my impatience I want the animation, quality, sound, script and plot to be absolutely top notch. 2017/2018 sounds better.

Anyone else feel really futuristic when we mention those years? Flying cars everywhere? XD

I doubt flying cars could ever be invented by that time...

They should at least give it 4 years for the next movie after the last. I'd rather wait to have a quality film than have it rushed. I'm not too sure if they have started working on the 3rd movie yet.

For the second movie they had to revise all the 3D models, because 1. they grown older and 2. they've changed their animation software. It is a completly new level of animation we will see.
Maybe it means that the characters in the 3rd movie are in the same age like in the 2nd and the technical site won't be improved even more, but we will see at least the same quality.

I think Zer0x made a good point. I hope that DW is using their time wisely and can get quality work done in that shortened time.

I understand her (his?) point but I'm worried about how they can storyboard, record, previs., ect HTTYD3 and make it beautiful in just two years...
