I just thought of something. Maybe Stoick won't appear at all and Gerard Butler is listed as returning because both HTTYD 2 and 3 were green-lighted at the same time, so he probably signed up for both films before Dean decided to axe Stoick off...

Just a theory though. They can go "Muffasa" on us for all we know...
Well you know Hiccup did kinda go all Lion King on us in a way, running away, loosing his father, returning home to take down the bad guy, then lion king moment when he took over as chief ;)

Since he died I won't ve suprised if they do flashbacks
What about those feverish PTSD dreams that cause sudden awakenings?
Did anybody else notice my signature has shrunk?

I don't know if anyone is still following this forum, but I was on IMDb looking for anything new about HTTYD3 and saw Gerard Butler still signed on as Stoick. I know the most likely explanation is flashbacks, but am I the only one who's a sucker for a happy ending? I still really want Stoick to have gotten away somehow. I know him being alive is a cheesey cheat, and it robs Hiccup's speech at his funeral of the emotional weight, but I want them to be one big happy family. :hiccup: :valka: :stoick: :toothless: .

i very much doubt they will bring stoik back
it will be a flashback or hiccup seeing him in a dream when hees struggling or something similar to that

that does bring up another question though IF he does come to hiccup in a dream while heas struggling to fill the role of chief which i feel is the most likely scenario (don't know why just a gut feeling)
then does that mean the 3rd film is set soon after the 2nd i think the probable return of drago almost confirms this i doubt it will be another 5 years maybe 6 months to a year or two

I saw the post mentioned as well. of course Stoick won't come back. it's absurd to think so after what happend in the 2nd film. A flashback/s, or backstory is very likely. and a smart move too. we will see Stoick again, even though we thought we woulden't have that privelege again. :stoick: :(

It might not be flashbacks or dreams. Maybe we'll get that Cloud Atlas style of storytelling where multiple stories from multiple timelines seamlessly overlap to form one huge story arc by the end of the movie. Cloud Atlas started with a "Let me tell you a story" scene, which is exactly where HTTYD is heading. So maybe the movie will start with old(er) Hiccup saying "There once used to be dragons when I was a boy", and then it will jump somewhere into the past and start explaining stuff, once from post HTTYD2 era, then from pre-HTTYD1 era, etc.

Wouldn't that be awesome?

I can't give an opinion on Cloud Atlas (I've not seen it) from what I understand though it's somewhat divisive, you either like it or you don't. Some of that does come down to the multiple interwoven stories. Based on that and the fact HTTYD is still directed at a younger audience. I would suspect DW would be less willing to do multiple stories from differing times, since it could be more confusing. I'm not saying they won't or can't do it. Just that it can be difficult to pull off and with the general target audience in mind. I would more suspect that they'll stick to flashbacks/dreams/inner voice for Hiccup more than anything else.
