His transformation from simply being a grumpy old man who somewhat exaggerated valid concerns to a true villain did make him interesting in season one like you mentioned. His double agent type role in the season finale was a particularly good twist in my opinion. He and Alvin seemed to legitimately outsmart Hiccup in order to gain the dragon training secrets he wouldn't give up voluntarily. Unfortunately, the writers didn't follow up on the idea very well in season two in my opinion. Apparently all they could think of with their newfound dragon knowledge was to plant a few Whispering Death eggs on Berk? Why didn't they actually use the grown Whispering Deaths in an attack? The finale clearly showed them to be capable of doing such a thing when they turned the tables on Dagur. For that matter, Mildew seemed to forget anything he learned from Hiccup when he encountered the Skrill. He was trying to whack it with his stick if I remember correctly. I don't know if the writers changed their plans on the fly and moved away from something that they initially wanted to do with Mildew or if it's just a case where their vision just didn't quite suite me, but I feel like the build up was a lot better than the payoff in his character arc. |
Come death. Come suffering. I will not live in fear. In this fleeting life where time escapes us, the path of least resistance is a slow quiet death. I'd rather burn out than fade away. | |

It's one of the problems I have with season 2. Why all the set up for one episode where he honestly wasn't used to his full extent then just more or less dropped. To top it off though why did no no one on Berk at least bring up the fact Mildew was helping Alvin. The way season one left off as viewers we were given the impression that they didn't know Mildew had double crossed them. So why no mention of how they apparently knew now. Not even a single mention in "Worst in Show" were they possibly had to have seen him. If they didn't see him which is possible do to the scene where Mildew jumps into the hole before Alvin and Savage although it's a stretch at best. Why after that in a "View to a Skrill part 2" we get Hiccup noticing and mentioning him, but why was all I could think why now and not earlier. Why mention his name in a way that gives off the feeling you knew what he'd done already. I don't know it just feels like to me that were supposed to sum it by saying time had passed between seasons 1 & 2 and so a few things must have happened also, but I just don't think it's a good enough excuse/theory personally. It just irritates me to see a character with at least some legitimately good villain moments never truly get an end to his character arc, and instead fade into the background. This is one thing I would honestly like to ask the creators about since I'm curious as to their reasoning behind it. I have a question though. To anyone who reads this thread why do you hate/dislike Mildew? What problems with him do you have? I'm curious of your answers, and wouldn't mind reading them. |
