| Anyone else feel kinda alone in the book fandom? | |

Honestly I'll admit in a heartbeat the movie was better than the first one… but the later ones I just.. I just can't. In fact I'll tell anyone to start at book eight, for fear that they'll judge the first one. Not that I don't like the first one. Lots of good laughs and the Green death and Hiccup was particularly enjoyable. |

In all honesty, the books just don't tickle my fancy. They don't really look like the books I'll enjoy reading, so I've never read them. |

OH GOSH. THANK YOU TOO. -hugs the pain away- 'ruin the movie'?? Are you freaking kidding me? Since when did reading a book which a film was based on ever ruin it? If anything, it makes it better as there is even more information and context and ugh it just makes everything so much BETTER, OKAY. Besides, the book and movie are different in so many ways, you're able to easily appreciate each little universe on it's own, without any worry of upcoming 'spoilers'. I can see where they may get a bad perception of them from the first book, as compared to the rest of the series, it's not quite as good. However, when people don't even give them one chance, that's when I start to get upset. Not even willing to look into them because they're too 'childish' is just ludicrous. What if they believed that about the film, huh? |

I don't think it's fair to sit back and say the movie(movies soon) is better than the books or vice versa. They are two separate things, yes one does draw from the other but they are separate and should be looked at for their different strengths and weaknesses. As book fans though when someone says the books are childish they're not wrong since as a series it was written for children, but that doesn't mean we can't take something from that. Just because it's "for children" doesn't mean it can't touch on adult themes in subtle ways. (This idea in my opinion goes for anything by the way) I do think though that when people say it they're mostly referencing book one. To those who think so my recommendation would have to be read book one then immediately go into books 2 & 3 since that's where a lot of what book fans recommend the books for starts to kick in. Also in my opinion it's where the story that ties the series together as whole starts to kick in as well. Book one truly is an opener, but in my opinion it's a well planed opener since after reading the other books you can go back to it and see the subtleties you missed since you can't read the later books first. |

Actually I found that reading the books can ruin the movie because it means you make loads of comparisons, and you then realise how much less the movies has or how different the movie is from the book. I imagine that if I hadn't read The Hobbit so many times, I would think that the movies were amazing (which I don't. I think they're okay at best) |

I disagree with this. I think that if anything it can enhance the experience more so than it could take away. Since you can sit back and see what they had to leave out and what they kept in. So you can sit there and say oh I know that scene or that character looks exactly like what I thought they'd look like. This may just be me, but I think the reason I say it is because I see and understand tht there are things a book can do that a movie can't, and this mostly has to do with time constraints in my mind. There are also things a movie can do that books can't it works both ways, and it's why generally they can go well together if you know what to use and what not to use from your source material. |

Exactly. I don't see how it's very fair to judge them side by side. Both of them are so amazing in their own ways. The only reason I like the movie better than the first book is because of a personal story of when I watched it. It was a rough time in my family(my dad was in the hospital. He's fine as of now.) and I watched the movie alone. At the moment it was the only thing that made me the slightest bit happy. I found the books not very soon after and celebrated that there was more than just one movie. In fact there's so much now. When it's over I'll have to look for a different book series... Oh no.. OH NO *headdesk* gaaaah |

That's another thing. I find movies tend to completely ruin my mental image of a character, meaning I'll only ever see the character from the movie, even when I don't want to! Anyway, I get what you're saying, but I just find it's the opposite for me personally. |

The movie has personal value to me as I said in the post above ^ but I just love every single little thing in this fandom x3 |
