OH GOSH. THANK YOU TOO. -hugs the pain away-
'ruin the movie'?? Are you freaking kidding me? Since when did reading a book which a film was based on ever ruin it? If anything, it makes it better as there is even more information and context and ugh it just makes everything so much BETTER, OKAY. Besides, the book and movie are different in so many ways, you're able to easily appreciate each little universe on it's own, without any worry of upcoming 'spoilers'.

Actually I found that reading the books can ruin the movie because it means you make loads of comparisons, and you then realise how much less the movies has or how different the movie is from the book.

I imagine that if I hadn't read The Hobbit so many times, I would think that the movies were amazing (which I don't. I think they're okay at best)
I like to think of the argument as not really necessary. I imagine movies and books as two different fandoms and like each one for what the other one doesn't have.

I honestly have no idea what you mean. We're simply discussing our opinions when it comes to reading books and watching films that are based upon on or the other.

You're saying that you shouldn't read the books that the movie is based upon because it ruins it. I was stating that I think of them as two different things. It doesn't have to ruin it.

I'm not saying you shouldn't read them! I'm saying that I, personally, find that they can detract from the film. I still read books because, in all honesty, I think they're vastly better than their big screen counterparts.

True. Of course we're all pretty biased on most things depending on whether your a movie person or a book person. XD Since movie lovers will typically say they enjoyed the movie better and book lovers will say the book. I used to be pretty biased before I kinda came to just accept that both the movie and book are wonderful and I really can't very well choose.

We're all biased. That's why they're our opinions! XD

I read the books years and YEARS before HTTYD was even thought of as a movie but after awhile I started realizing that the books were just not up to my caliber for reading. (I started them in 2004).

The only books of the series I have liked were book 11 because it was much more adult-like than the originals of the series.

And I will admit that I did not want to see HTTYD because I thought it would be as bad as the books and so I never saw it until the Halloween of 2010 and as I watched it I was freaking surprised by how much better it was than the books.

And for that reason and many more I like the movie a million times better.

Honestly I can see both sides since I've been on both sides before. The reason I think reading the books would hurt the movie experience in any way. I think has to do a lot with the quality and detail of the movie and how much the creators cared about the original work. From that I think if the movie does the original work justice I'm personally willing to let it slide somewhat if my own mental image of a character is different from what I saw on screen. This is however something I think is most certainly based on personal opinion more than anything else since whether the movie is good or bad you might agree or not agree with the character representation. On another note though since I'm reading the books before I watch the GoT series. I'm curious to see if my outlook will be more or less critical of it than someone who watched the series first then read the books.

I will say though that I do agree with the idea that a movie can be made worse if you had read the books it was based on before going to see it. Even though I had seen the movie before getting a hold of the books I can say my opinion of "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" wasn't as bad as someones who had read the books prior. That being said it wasn't all that great of a movie to begin with and when looked at beside the book series just feels like there was very little love put into it. Other than that I think it's (at least for me) a very case by case basis and that maybe how much I care about that particular series or franchise also has to do at least some with it as well.
See you in the skies Dragon Rider!

The Dragon Root:Thing what I wrote.

Is Toothless Evil? :Me possibly being crazy, but fun.

But see. You at least have them a chance. So what if you didn't like them, you tried them and that's what matters x3 and I agree 11 is the best one

The books are better in my opinion. If you read the whole series you'll know why. Just hiccup's personality makes a difference!

Back to the subject, you're right, to me it seems like people just don't read it. Or sometimes they just judge the first book, which isn't all that good, at least compared to the others. Then they say it's not good. Sometimes they watch the movie first, or call them childish. The endings of the darker ones are epic, I hate it when people call them childish.

Honestly I'll admit in a heartbeat the movie was better than the first one… but the later ones I just.. I just can't. In fact I'll tell anyone to start at book eight, for fear that they'll judge the first one. Not that I don't like the first one. Lots of good laughs and the Green death and Hiccup was particularly enjoyable.
I know.... I read the books to my sister and she loves them, now!
What should I write on my signature? Hmm...
I am a Httyd, Gravity Falls and Portal (One and two) fan.
I'm also a bookworm and an introvert.
That was pretty random, but that's me summed up in two sentences.
