Why do you think of it as an anti-Hiccstrid term anyways? And why are people so against people not liking Hiccstrid (I'm not saying I'm against it I just don't care for it all that much. |

I'm not bashing anyone who does it, but I never understood the reason for trying to combine characters' names to form some sort of abbreviated couple name in the first place. I don't do that for the couples I know in real life, so I don't see a point in doing it for movie characters either. I just refer to them as Hiccup and Astrid. |
Come death. Come suffering. I will not live in fear. In this fleeting life where time escapes us, the path of least resistance is a slow quiet death. I'd rather burn out than fade away.

People do it because it conveys the fact that you're not just referring to those two characters, but those two characters' relationship. Its easier, more convenient and less confusing. Not to mention its a lot easier to look up content for whichever relationship you're interested in when theres one simple word to define it. If you type "Hiccup and Astrid" in to google or tumblr it'll be a lot less convenient than just typing in "hiccstrid" if you're looking for stuff specifically about their relationship. Thats not necessary for real life couples so of course people don't make official portmanteaus of their names. |

I always viewed it as the more dominant's name first then the less dominant's after (that's why it's Hiccstrid). Asscup sounds like a dirty/slutty ship. Astriccup reminds me of stars (astrology) ;D And in this case Astrid would be top. And it would make more sense too, if you think like I do. |

This. So much this. I'm still relatively new to shipping but that's how I understand most ships' names are formed, especially with gay pairings. Sometimes there's even two separate ships for both variations of the same pairing (i.e. Naruto and Sasuke exist both as NaruSasu and SasuNaru and followers constantly argue over who should be the top and who the bottom). Now as for Hiccup and Astrid, I've seen a lot of people actually demand Hiccup to be more...active, dominant, assertive, etc. which in my opinion goes completely against his character. I've always viewed Astrid and Hiccup as going a little bit against traditional gender norms in fiction, which I love! I love that Astrid is tough and strong and Hiccup is a bit softer and less stoic(k) and that he actually opens her eyes and widens her horizon in the first movie. But it seems I'm pretty alone with that opinion. All I ever see is people moaning that Astrid made the first move and Hiccup better be the one to propose, etc. Why does everything always have to be so...traditional? If you want traditional gender roles, watch Disney. So yeah, I think Astriccup is more appropriate, but Hiccstrid just sounds a lot nicer. ![]() |

Plus, Astriccup is really hard to say, really, as long as it does not sound like a merged bad word, or if it's easy to say, I'm fine with it. |
What should I write on my signature? Hmm... I am a Httyd, Gravity Falls and Portal (One and two) fan. I'm also a bookworm and an introvert. That was pretty random, but that's me summed up in two sentences.

I must admit that Astriccup does merge their names better, but like others have been saying it sounds too much like Asscup ![]() |

I usually just say "Hiccup/Astrid." Hiccstrid sounds like a medical term. "Hello, I have a hiccstrid problem." |
"There's something you must remember when riding a dragon. There's no manual, no safety harness, no guarantees when you're on one of these beasts. All you have is the wind in your hair, and the clothes on your back. The only thing between you and that dragon is your saddle. You need to hold onto it for dear life, as that creature takes you the skies. That, is dragon riding."
