I think he's an effective bad guy as far as how scary he is but I don't like him as a character, he feels like he belongs more in the TV show than the movies. I wish he had been developed more and his backstory made more sense. His reasoning for trying to take over the world was kinda.... meh.
I wish his backstory was more fleshed out...even after seeing the movie multiple times, his past is soo hard to figure where his "take over the world with a dragon army" motives come from... but going by Stoick's flashback, Drago's been at it for years.. :(
Yeah. I'm sure they'll talk about it more in the third movie but it would have been nice for his backstory to have at least made sense for the sake of the second movie as a whole. Like stoick's flashback seemed random and unnecessary. It would have been more effective if he had something to do with Valka's past, so he at least seemed relevant in some way instead of just "random bad guy wants to take over the world because.... why not"

I think Drago is the type of villain that's good for one time use in a movie franchise. Yes he's a good general villain, but if the directors had fleshed out his character more, maybe given him a better back story and motives, I think he would have fit the movie better. He just seemed really out of place in HTTYD 2.
everything is better with flower crowns!

His backstory is not there so it's hard to understand why he doesn what he does. I sort of like him though.

A TON of potential depending on how they decide to use him going forward. He was effective for what they needed him to do in this movie. Loved the flashback of his meeting with Stoick.

"LET'S JUST SEE HOW WELL YOU MANAGE WITHOUT ME THEN!" Drago proceeds to burn the Chieftains alive.

The real Hiccup

I think Djimon Hounsou did a fantastic job, but I also think Drago could have used more screen time to expand on the fact that he is completely insane.

He's OK as a villain. The biggest positive is that he's appropriately menacing. However, I wish more time had been given to his backstory. I'd like to understand more about how he went from dragons killing his family, to trying for world domination. I'd also like to know a little more about what he'd been doing in all that time since his bold move of killing off all the chieftans. To have done something that dire, he strangely didn't seem to have crossed Stoick's mind in ages.
Come death. Come suffering. I will not live in fear. In this fleeting life where time escapes us, the path of least resistance is a slow quiet death. I'd rather burn out than fade away.

Maybe they'll do a short about his backstory; I hope so.

Personally, I think knowing less about his past makes him scary.
"There's something you must remember when riding a dragon. There's no manual, no safety harness, no guarantees when you're on one of these beasts. All you have is the wind in your hair, and the clothes on your back. The only thing between you and that dragon is your saddle. You need to hold onto it for dear life, as that creature takes you the skies. That, is dragon riding."
