I would caution Hiccup about lying in prose position upon Toothless's dorsal side. Should Toothless inadvertently snap shut the the dorsal plates, Hiccup will no longer be able to sire heirs.

i dont know i really loved the facial animations for toothless in that scene! also i think its just a way to show valkas knowledge of dragons and yes i would say it probably increases mobility. Kind of like the wing flaps of an airplane he could use the spikes to channel wind for minute changes, i guess well have to wait and see!

It's just another way to show that Valka is infinitely better than everyone else in the movie put together. Don't think too hard about it. I doubt anyone working on the movie did.
Number of times I've watched the trailer: 18.

My pet peeve: people who refer to complete strangers by their first name. The correct ways to refer to a "John Smith" whom you have never met are Smith, Mr Smith, or John Smith. Not "John". He's not your buddy.

I my opinion, this "hidden ability" could make the movie, I don't want to say worse, but it could make it "less perfect". Because it's not very logic at the moment. And I like my movies logic.
When the spikes on his back are actually partable to two, why didn't he made this before? I hope they will explain it in a logical way.

The only way I could explain it is, that Toothless is 20 years old, that means he was a teen in the first movie. Now he is fully grown. Maybe this division was the last step of his adolescence and it just needed something that trigger the new nerves.

I highly doubt it. So far the spikes serve no logical purpose. They shouldn't be able to affect his flight dynamics in any noticeable way (if anything they would hinder them).

Toothless doesn't need flaps. He's an animal and can simply shift his weight and the position of his wings. Aircraft have ailerons and flaps because they cannot do this.

You shouldn't forget that Toothless is grown over the years. Bigger size and higher weight means less stability while flying. An additional line stabilizers of stabilizers align to the cantral vertical axis of mass might be helpful. It's not a huge difference, but they are not useless.

They can't be flaps, because they are align to the streamwise, but they will reduce turbulences.

And now we also know why Toothless had two lines of spikes on his Tail and only one line on his back.

@Everyone who said the spikes "popped out" of his body:
Toothless had the spikes already in the first movie.

At most Valka has made them popped out more than usual and made it Toothless able to move the split spikes.

I also think they are for defense or for stable stability.
And I think DreamWorks will explain it in the movie, when Valka touches a nerve at Toothless or later in the movie.

Honestly I tihnk that it will be in there for a little bit of comedy relief, and I guess to show off just how smart Valka is (i.e. Make us go 'Wooowww How'd she know that?')

Honestly considering Toothless's biggest prowess is speed and maneuverability in flight at that speed. If the spines do anything I'd say it would be that. Although I'm no expert when it comes to flight mechanics or aerodynamics. So what they might exactly do is above me someone with more experience in those fields would have to say.
As far as I can tell all the extra spikes will do is add Drag (bad) by the increasing surface area. But I honestly don't know much about animals flight mechanics (I only know about aircraft and I highly doubt that that Dragons would need fins to maintain straight and level), so I may be wrong, they may actually be useful.

At least Toothless is happy:)
Agreed!
It can give him more stability, it could be sufficient for the aerodynamics (even though they were better in the aerodynamic way before this "enhancement").
Less speed, More stability (just what I think it could be for, and the impact on speed won't be big at all)

They're obviously thermoregulatory devices to prevent Toothless from overheating when rapidly firing consecutive plasma bolts. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
....I can't believe you just said that....Have you been hacked? :P

It's actually a really good theory!
The unknown part of Hiccdew, that I have known for a month, even more, and yet no one understood his deep thinking! Oh, look a sheep! :>

Hmm, strange. I thought that would be one of the last scenes of the movie. But where is Toothless' "hidden ability"?

Toothless must keep them shut else Hiccup might lose another leg.
