Gojo retired early too so he could pack a bag. It didn't take long, and afterward he went straight to bed. He knew he needed to get some rest if they were heading out at the break of dawn, but his mind wouldn't shut up. He just lay there, staring at the ceiling. Would these Defenders of the Wing be like the people he once knew so well? How would it feel to be around them? What were their beliefs? What would their island be like? The image of budding plum tree branches against the backdrop of a clear blue sky flashed before his eyes. He could almost smell its sweet perfume. Almost feel the tickle of grass bending in the breeze around him. "Satoru," a cherished voice murmured. His hand smacked the side of the wooden bed frame, and he jumped, his eyes snapping open. Nothing but ceiling. He sat up. Shoot. Almost dozed off. Oh well. Rest was for the weak anyway. Not that he was feeling particularly strong. Despite getting maybe three hours of patchy sleep, Gojo trudged to the stable at dawn. If he was lucky, maybe the twins would keep their yappers shut for fifteen minutes, and he could doze off in the saddle. Or maybe rushing wind in his face would wake him up. Yeah, probably that. Better be that. The odds of the twins being quiet were not in his favor. |

There was only the faintest hint of a streak of gray on the eastern horizon when the familiar heat and fishy moisture of Firelash's gentle tongue on his cheek coaxed Javon from sleep. He reluctantly opened his eyes, but did not at once move; he took a few moments to collect his thoughts, then pushed back the blanket, rolled off the bed, and stood. Firelash quickly gave the rest of the chuckling viking's upper body a light bath as was routine, and then the lad slipped on an undertunic, stepped to the rain barrel just outside his door, and thoroughly splashed his face. It was a very invigorating way to start any day, even when he had to use a hatchet to break through a layer of ice. He shivered at that thought; thankfully, this was the warmer part of the year. He glanced at the sky before heading back inside; it was slowly growing lighter, but he still had a fair bit of time before dawn proper. Inside his hut, he donned his chainshirt and over it, his well-worn forest-green woolen tunic. He then fastened his leathern belt and baldric, and looked around the simple interior for anything else he might need. He took his quiver and bow from where they hung near the door, and deftly equipped them; hunting might be good on some of the islands they'd have to stop at. He gave his knives and sword a couple quick passes on the sharpening stone and carefully oiled them. He grabbed his sunstone from a shelf and dropped it into an empty pouch, then filled and corked a few earthenware flasks, tucking a couple into his dragon's saddlebags and fastening a couple to his belt. He didn't enjoy being parched while in the air. That done, he decided he probably had everything necessary, and his dragon followed him out the door. As the two took to the air, the first ribbons of fire began to paint the eastern edges of the distant clouds. A much-too-short flight brought them to the stables, and just as the sun started to peek above the ocean waves, they touched down on the runway, and Firelash reared up, wings and head aflame, and heralded the new sun's rising. Javon couldn't help grinning at his dragon's theatrics, although he was pretty sure most of the other Riders --especially those who might still be trying to sleep-- wouldn't approve. The Nightmare dropped back to all four sets of talons and extinguished his fire, and Javon looked over the assembled vikings. Well, the assembled viking. Gojo and Raiju were there, but it seemed neither Fishlegs nor the twins had arrived yet. A muted clamor came from the direction of the Thorstons' hut, however, so he guessed they were at least up. Blocking the binding sliver of the rising sun with his hand, he turned to look toward Fishlegs' hut, just in time to see a shape that could only be the husky viking on the Gronckle's back lift off from the ground. Very good; they'd all be with them shortly. He turned back to the Skrill and his rider, who both looked still partially asleep. "Morning, Gojo, Raiju. Ready to ride?" |

In the company in his fellow rider, Gojo put on his cocky grin, and pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "You know it." His dragon obviously didn't share the sentiment. He decided to display his displeasure by flopping on his side with a pained roar. Gojo side-eyed him and crossed his arms. "Drama queen." Raiju swiped his tail across the floorboards, aiming for the white-haired man's feet, but Gojo jumped it like he was skipping rope. "That was pathetic." He tossed his head back, bangs falling in his eyes, to look at his dragon. "You're not even trying." Done with the shenanigans, Raiju huffed and closed his eyes. "C'mon." Gojo got on one knee and rubbed his dragon's belly in an attempt to satisfy him. He cast a quick glance at Javon before leaning closer to Raiju and whispering: "You're making me look bad." He got no response, so after a few moments he pushed himself to his feet and addressed his companion. "I'm sure he'll get up in a minute." |

Just then, Meatlug dropped to a four-point landing on the strip. "Morning, Riders," Fishlegs said. "Twins still aren't here?" Javon jerked his head in the direction of the Thorstons' hut, where an extra-loud clang immediately preceded the opening of their door and the subsequent high-speed emergence of a familiar Zippleback. The two Nuts on its necks looked more awake than most of the other Riders on the runway that morning as it touched down with a small explosion. "Alright, Team, let's ride!" Tuffnut exclaimed exuberantly. Javon opened his mouth to ask about the black smudges on their faces, but Fishlegs beat him to it. "Uh... are you guys okay? What was all that racket?" "That?" Ruff replied. "That was the Thorston dawnbreaker, a tradition long passed down from Thorston to Thorston, Nut to Nut, for early mornings just such as these!" "Yeah!" Tuff put in. "Nothing like a little fire-and-mace action to kick the day into high gear, y'know? Clears the sinuses and gets you ready to use your head!" He and his sister crashed their helmets together. "Yeah! That's what I'm talking about!" Javon closed his mouth, shook his head, and rolled his eyes. "Okay... Just another normal day in the Thorston clan, I guess..." Fishlegs remarked. "Au contraire, mon ami," Tuff replied. "For a Thorston, normalcy is abnormal, for you see..." Javon did his best to tune them out. "Everyone got what you need?" |

Gojo ran his thumb under the strap of the satchel draped crossbody around him to indicate that he did. Then, in a half-hearted attempt, he propped his foot up on Raiju's side and shoved him with it. The Skrill just huffed, and Gojo let out a defeated sigh. "All ready!" Fishlegs sat straighter in the saddle. "I've got extra clothes and blankets—" He gestured to one of three saddlebags. "—and snacks—" "Ohhh, snacks?" Ruffnut butted in. "What kind of snacks, Fishy, my man?" her brother added. ". . . Never mind . . ." "They're to share, right?" Ruff gave him the puppy-dog eyes. "Uh, look at the sun. I think we should get going now. We're wasting the day away!" Fishlegs nervously chuckled as Meatlug took to the air. The twins turned towards each other, then looked at the Gronckle above before taking off after her. "Are you trying to avoid our Important Foody Question of the Day?" Tuffnut called as Barf and Belch pursued Meatlug, who was fluttering her little wigs as fast as she could. Gojo watched them fly rings for a moment, then he turned around, got down on one knee again, and pinched Raiju on the neck right below his crest. The dragon yelped and immediately got up, zooming into the sky out of Gojo's reach. He stared down at his rider contemptuously. He seemed content to stay up there, but then Barch came barreling through with no regard for obstacles and sent him diving out of their way with an indignant roar. "Hey," Gojo called, "come down and we can go after them. And maybe steal some of Fishlegs's snacks while we're at it!" The dragon seemed to consider this for a moment, then dove for Gojo, but instead of landing, he reached out his talons and snatched his rider by the arms. Gojo realized what was happening as he feet lifted off the ground. "Hey, hey, hey!" he tried to object, but it was too late. Raiju had lifted him into the air and was carrying him like cargo. After getting over the initial shock, a rush of adrenaline coursed through his veins, and he realized he was enjoying it. Well, he was right. The cold air whipping in his face was definitely a wake up call. Only problem was his arms really hurt in this position. "C'mon, can't carry me like this all day! I'm sorry, okay?" he projected over the wind to make sure Raiju heard him. His dragon looked down at him with a smug expression, then went back to focusing on where he was flying. "Hey!" Before he had time to process it, he felt his body being launched into the air by Rajiu's powerful legs. He flipped around in the air, screaming, yet somehow exhilarated. But Raiju didn't come immediately and the feeling was soon replaced by fear as he plummeted closer and closer to the sea below. Then, just as he started bracing himself to smack into water that was as hard as stone, a blue shaped whizzed below him, and he slammed against it, clutching to it for dear life. "Gee, took you long enough," he mumbled, face squashed against his dragon's neck. Raiju let out an evil little dragon-cackle as he climbed back up in altitude. Once Raiju had leveled himself, Gojo carefully scooted into the saddle and sat up. "Mhm. Do you want those snacks or not?" Upon hearing that, Raiju took off after the others. |

Javon shook his head again. "Such a class act," he murmured sarcastically to his dragon, remembering Hiccup's remark from a previous mission. Firelash snorted in amusement. The viking grinned. "Well anyway, let's get moving." The dragon roared again, --not quite the long, full-throated bugle with which he had greeted the rising sky-fire, but a shorter, excited cry that nevertheless reverberated with power,-- charged off the runway, spread his mighty wings, and with a few strong strokes, joined the others in motley formation. There was no better feeling in all the nine realms than being a part of that action, Javon reflected, smiling. Then he gave his dragon a nudge, and they dropped back to where Gojo and his temperamental Skrill flew at the back of the group. "Hey, you guys alright?" the dark-haired viking asked. |

Gojo looked over and gave him a nonchalant grin. "Oh yeah. Nothing like watching my life flash before my eyes after an early morning rise." Raiju snorted in amusement, and Gojo lightly slapped him on the neck. |

It was Javon's turn to snort in amusement. "Okay, if you're sure." The Monstrous Nightmare and his rider began to flap ahead again, then evidently changed their minds and dropped back to the Skrill's side. "Hey, can I, uh, ask you something else? Been wondering about it since yesterday. Y'know when we," the viking gestured between himself and his dragon, "announced our arrival and woke you up? I, uh, I was wondering why your very first reaction to hearing a dragon, er, my dragon, roaring nearby was to draw your sword?" The young man paused awkwardly, then went on in a bit of a rush, "Because obviously you ride a dragon, and not just any dragon, but a Skrill, which is supposed to be almost untrainable, and it seemed a bit strange that someone who rides a dragon, any dragon, especially one as rare as a Skrill, would draw a sword at the sound of a dragon's roar, y'know?" Firelash snorted, clearly unimpressed with his rider's rambling. "What? Come on, you know I don't like asking personal questions!" the viking grumbled. Firelash made no further comment, so he looked back over to Gojo. |

Gojo had his head cocked to one side with a quizzical grin on his face, waiting for Javon to finish. When he knew it was over, he spoke up. “Well, dragons are powerful creatures. Much stronger than you and I combined will ever be. Not all of them are going to give you a chance if they see easy prey. Getting startled awake like that, my first instinct is self defense.” |

"Hm... guess that makes sense," the Nightmare rider replied. "Although I've never seen, or even heard of, a dragon trying to eat a viking. Sure, scare one on a bad day and you might be in for fire and talons; but 'easy prey'? Don't think that's how they see us. A threat or nuisance? Sure. But they eat fish and the odd herd-animal here and there, or rocks, or in rare cases, other dragons or maybe their eggs. Not people. Or..." his brow creased as a new thought occurred to him. "did they? Y'know, back where you came from?" |
