Some have stated this already, but the whole series is based on the fact that success comes with a sacrifice.

i.e HTTYD=foot HTTYD 2=Stoick

So, HTTYD 3=dragons?

This may be just me, but if they do decide to tell about the disappearance of the dragons, I want the ending to be Hiccup telling us about his hopes of the dragons' return one day. Maybe something like, "Yes, there were dragons when I was a boy, and maybe, just maybe they will one day return" or something like that. Maybe then they could show a modern day Berk and we hear the scream of a night fury and that's it. I just like the idea of the story having a little bit of hope at the end without making it too sappy.
Yes, but a scream of a night fury and a modern day setting doesn't exactly 'fit' the series. HTTYD has been different because of its age. The designers could be imaginative, they could make rock formations, or strange building and objects, because not much is known about the Viking times (not that much). If a modern age setting comes in, it changes quite some things.

A echoing (and slowly fading) dragon roar would be nice though.
I see what your saying, I don't think there should be like skyscrapers or anything like that. Maybe they could show the ruins of Berk (because Vikings aren't around anymore) and they have Hiccup say "This is Berk ..."
"Hiccup what you're looking for isn't out there. It's in here, maybe you just don't see it yet."

I don't see why they absolutely have to be separated, and to me, reasoning it with 'because that's the only way it could happen/be killed of with' doesn't seem to fulfill anything. That's essentially saying that the plot ending should be predictable years before the movie is even released, and that's perfectly alright.
Good point. This is partly why I hope Dean does something unexpected. He's got our attention now, so it's a good opportunity to turn our expectations on their heads.

Also, I think that most people are generally bad at predicting endings. I don't remember anyone successfully predicting what would happen in HTTYD 2. The only major thing some people got right was Stoick's death, but most of them predicted it would happen in the third film (me included).

Ah but last time I only had one movie to extrapolate from. Now there are two. Plus lots of other material. Plenty to guess at a vector, or maybe a flight path

Here's what's going to happen: Toothless, the last Night Fury, will die, but years later, he will be reincarnated as Nick Fury. 8)
My other fandoms summed up in gifs:

Well, that's not what immediately comes to mind when I think of crossovers between Disney and Dreamworks. Still, it's not too bad as crossover ideas go.

Also, given your theory, and given that Defenders of Berk shows that Hiccup has awesome shield throwing powers...

*Insert joke about Captain America riding Nick Fury here*
Number of times I've watched the trailer: 18.

My pet peeve: people who refer to complete strangers by their first name. The correct ways to refer to a "John Smith" whom you have never met are Smith, Mr Smith, or John Smith. Not "John". He's not your buddy.

Forty-one buckets of fireworms on the wall, forty-one buckets of worms! Take one down, pass it around, you got forty buckets of fireworms on the wall..........- one bucket of worms! I have a feeling that when the dragons leave(I guess that's an option from what we've heard), there will be a small montage where Hiccup re-builts the tail fin from "Gift Of The Night Fury", only this time he makes it black to fit with Toothless's color. Then, there is a scene where all the riders are saying goodbye to their dragons(Astrid to Stormfly and so on...) and the last ones to say goodbye are Hiccup and Toothless. Hiccup tells him to take care, Toothless licks him for a bit and then he orders the dragons to take flight(If he will still be the Alpha) and they leave. After they all fly away, Toothless looks back and he sees Hiccup smiling at him and Toothless gives him his famous smile before flying away.

As they fly and all the Vikings watch them leave, Hiccup's narration comes in:
This is Berk. Small, deserted and has a very bad weather problem. The legends that were told of it are grand and intense, the actual events that these legends were based on are even more so. There were indeed great chiefs, and all Berkians were heroes in their own way. While I can't confirm that all the legends and stories were true, I can confirm 1 thing. When I was a boy, there were... Dragons.

I kind of improvised that monolog on the spot. Excuse me if it's not all that good...
