Wait they made sequels to those? Where in the nine circles of hell. I mean, I've out myself on the record many times as saying that HTTYD should not have had any sequels, but you can at least see why they were made - namely, there's a heck of a lot of money to be made in whoring out a successful film, and hey, if they happen to actually get a good movie out of it, no executive is going to complain. But how on earth did either of those movies make enough money to justify sequels? |
Number of times I've watched the trailer: 18. My pet peeve: people who refer to complete strangers by their first name. The correct ways to refer to a "John Smith" whom you have never met are Smith, Mr Smith, or John Smith. Not "John". He's not your buddy. | |

Why would it ruin the franchise for you? Does it make the trilogy worse when the 4th part fails? It's same like with Star Wars 15 years ago. The original trlogy was brilliant, then came Episode I and the fandom split into two types: 1. The people who say, that there is only one Star Wars trilogy and just ignore the prequels (I'm part of them). 2. And the people who have started to sing 'George Lucas raped our childhood'. And they hated Star Wars from this moment on. I don't know how a bad sequel could ruin a brilliant original. |

I think it comes down to an idea, once in your head, becoming hard to get rid of. To use Star Wars as an example, many people liked the idea of the Force as something that could be felt and applied, but never completely understood. In the original film in particular, it made for a good contrast to the Empire's reliance in technology (Darth Vader being presented as an exception to the Empire's general nature). Once you've got the idea that it's just microbes giving superpowers (note: I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, so I've probably got the specifics wrong), it's hard not to view the original through that lens. I could actually give an example from HTTYD 2, but since I'm seeing it in a couple of days, I'll probably just wait until I know exactly how that element is presented before I get into an argument about it. |

A fourth I think would really only be for money while the trilogy is money AND storyline. |

That depends on the viewpoint, the studio finances the movie to earn money, but I don't think their are many high class directors (especially not DeBlois) who do the job for the money and what I've heared from the few DW people I know, the biggest part of the team neihter. |

The thing is, the creative people are never the ones deciding whether or not a sequel gets made. That's always the executives and the like. Sure, I have no doubt that plenty of executives are fine with letting those creative people do what they want with the inevitable sequel (within some bounds of reason), but the decision of whether or not that sequel gets made at all comes from way higher up. In regards to HTTYD specifically, DeBlois has been pretty clear that he intends this to be a trilogy. No less (which I'm sure was to Katzenberg's great delight), but no more (which is probably no big problem to Katzenberg - there's always someone who will jump at the chance to direct a movie, any movie, just because they want to direct a movie, any movie). |

Let's all be honest though if they did decide to make a fourth movie, it WOULD work because we WOULD go see it. |

Define "work". Oh, it would make money, if only put of train wreck syndrome (though don't let Katzenberg find that out), but it would take a small-scale miracle to actually get a good story out of it. |
