I loved the lighting in the scene over the clouds where Hiccup encounters Valka and Cloudjumper. Knowing that Roger Deakins takes advantage of location to light scenes, I thought "Why is the lighting so warm and epic here?" Then I realized: There's just been a forest fire! This is what lighting looks like as it filters through smoke, especially nearer sunset. |

Actually I think there wasn't a single scene where the lighting did not help convey the mood perfectly. The more muted color tones also helped with the overall darker theme. |

The night scenes that take place on the water, and use the diffuse bounce light from the ocean.... the climactic scene that starts at predawn and ends in day--reflecting the first scene in HTTYD1... |
